E84 to E90?

Curious if anyone has gone from an E84 X1 to an older E90 3 series? Thoughts and opinions?

I have a 2013 X1 sdrive that I truly enjoy, but don't find myself needing the extra cargo room as much as I used to. Found a low mile 2011 3 series sedan locally that seems to have the same options. Just think that maybe the 3 series would be an even more fun car to drive than my X1?

I didn't find the e90 as comfortable or spacious interior wise, but I am 6'4".

I loved my E90 and if our love the E84 the LCI E90 is pretty well identical inside and driving the 335 is just awesome. I miss mine.

Considering that the E84 is basically an E90 with raised suspension you'd be better off spending a bit of money on improving that and getting some sticky tires to make the car more fun.
Could also spend a couple hundred bucks on a tune to make the engine put out more power.
Or upgrade the speakers to improve the audio quality.

I think unless you're going to a 2 series, it's just not worth the expenditure.

You might like an E91 better. Though the X1 is based on the chassis, the E91 trunk space feels larger.

I adore my E90, and plan to pick up an E90 M3 as one of my "bucket list" cars that I can be an old man in and yell "they don't make em like this anymore"

That being said, the E84 feels more refined. Depends on what you're going after.

The LCI-ed E90 is certainly nicer. I drove the e91 when looking for a wagon. Love it! But good specimens are hard to find. X1 is like an e91 but with modern drive train and interior. It serves a great purpose as our family hauler. For the day to day driving routines, I didn't find the X1 less sporting than the e91.

If you don't need space I'd get a 335i coupe and mod the heck out of it. Then again I think a modded 135i would quite the hoot. Then again a Miata would be funner in legal speeds. And that would be my take. Keep the X1 for sporting practicality and add a dedicated RWD sportster for real smiles.

Hi OP, prior to our E84 X135, I had a '08 6MT E90 328 sport package, my wife had '11.5 E90 6AT 328 non sport

my $.02 is that is matters a great deal how the E90 is optioned and what you want to get out of it.

For pure fun, the 6MT 328 was pretty great. Lighter weight, old school, analog. It was like a 4dr miata you could take clients out in. Loved it.

On the other hand, the 6AT 328 was a hot mess due to GM tranny and lack of sport suspension and sport seats. No thanks, couldn't wait for the least to end.

You should get an E90 M3. Can't go wrong with that, and for what it's worth, I think if you aren't getting an M3, the E84 X1 is close enough to a 3er that it isn't worth the transaction costs to change things up.

Miata is light and nimble. BMW's answer is the ever bloating Z4.

2 totally different motors. one is turbo and one is not. for modding, the N20 is way better.

Except for the M flavours. they are good especially the clown show M Coupe. If you squint your eyes hard, you can kinda see a bit of resemblance with our E84s.

Yes, for sure, we can't compare a 33xx lb sedan with a 26xx lb 2 dr 2 seater, and agree the E89 was a porky grand tourer (and our X1, which are in the 39xx lb range are even worse in that regard)

I was referring more to the driving fun that you can get out of the E90 328 6MT. It was a really benign car with a bit more grip than power in stock form, and had the great old school RWD dynamics that made BMW famous

Whoa! Are referring to an armoured X1 for a lightweight dictator?
Here are the official curb weights of normal X1 e84.

sDrive28i: 3527lbs
xDrive28i: 3726lbs (differential and transfer case add 200lb penalty)
Xdrive 35i: 3891lbs (a whopping 350lb+ over the 2WD base model!)

That's it. 3891lb in the brochure is likely 39xx lb in the real world.

+200lb for the rwd n20 model vs e90 328 so there's pork everywhere

I have an e90 pre lci 328i and e84 x1 and both are good. I prefer the n/a motor in the e90 as it's more responsive, the sport seats are better and the sport suspension soaks up the bumps a little better than the X1's. The X1 is newer and feels tighter as well as looks nicer than the e90. If I could only have one I would pick the X1 mostly due to the extra cargo space and that it is newer. I also really enjoy the all wheel drive X1 in the winter.

Well the optioned out E90 that I found sold before I could go see it, so I'm back on the search for one. Lots available locally, but trying to find one at a BMW dealer so I can maximize my trade in value. Adding to the difficulty, I'm only looking at 2011's with around 35K miles.

I did find a red 335i coupe, but I'm not crazy about the red, and the wife nixed it for being a coupe.

+1 the E90 M3 will go down as one of the best drivers cars ever made. Great balance of power to chassis dynamics.

Some will complain of lack of torque when compared to a turbo car, but you can flog an S65 all day and it will still love you.

MOST turbo cars will give you inconsistent performance due to the heat if you beat on them for too long in a single outing.
