Aftersale music improvement

Hello all,

going to order my X1 on Monday! (Christmas present)!!!
Alpine white s1.8
alloy weels 17inch
Xenon lights
Lighting package
roof rails
black leather seats

However, the music is rather disappointng (for those who want LOUD music in the car) i.e Club style...

My question is...
1) Can you remove the original radio and put and aftersale without loosing the steering wheel controls? it would be a pity to ruin them
2) Is there a way to "pimp" up the original radio (i.e amplifiers etc) without ripping up the entire car and guarantee?

any experience

thanks
Konstantinos

It is very expensive for what you get. For half that money you can make the car a moving club and have an output very high end. But I do not want to have to dismantle a new BMW (i am soooo excited)

Do we know what the specs are for the differrent music categories? iu.e output in watts etc? BMW prof, HK? etc?

I have bean searching for the specs and cant find anything. the BMW dealer does not know also

It's "losing", by the way :-)

Check out Musicar Northwest. They have several very nice options without having to change out your head unit (speaker upgrades, amp upgrades, DSP tuning, etc.) Ken, the owner, is a very nice guy to work with. He's a member of this forum.

Um....Konstantinos lives in Greece. My experience of most orders from the USA is that after you add the courier costs, import duties and local taxes its far far cheaper buying things locally. There are exceptions of course, did some business with CocoMats in the USA and they were fantastic. Other experiences not so good, many don't want to ship abroad or insist on using DHL, UPS etc.

Oh, and his first language I would suspect is Greek, not English.

Konstantinos, why not go halfway and order the HiFi speaker upgrade?

And a tip with the standard system - increase the treble all the way to the top, and reduce the bass to the middle level.

Remember BMW shoves 2 subwoofers under the front seats so the standard system is a bit bass heavy already.

If it's more bass you need then I'm a scratching my head

Your dealer should know. The basics are in the X1 brochure:

Professional - Don't know output but probably around 100w, six speakers
Business - 180w, 8 speakers
HK - 340w, 11 speakers

Detail for the HK system is :
4 x 26 mm metal-matrix dome tweeters, front & side rear
4 x 100 mm metal-matrix midrange speakers, front & side rear
2 x 217 mm woofers (central bass), below front seats
1 x 80 mm x 200 mm EDPL mid-range tweeter, dashboard

Harman Kardon high-performance DSP amplifier with 340 watt total output

A brochure for the HK system on the X1 is here http://www.bmw.harmankardon.com/brochures/model01.pdf

And again your dealer is an idiot, he should know this.

Hi, I signed up for the HK. I can tell you - it´s unbeliveble... Fantastic sound. Listen to it, and you´ll order it... If you watch a DVD in the car (like The Lord of the Rings) you will get surprised. Order the Hk, it is worth every penny...

Hi Konstantinos
I have asked BMW, here in Greece, for retroupgrade of the hifi and the only available (and approved) is an Alpine system for about 800euro !!!(No thanks)
I am looking for front tweeters and mid speakers replacement in the car hifi market.

Go for the HK, awesome sound!!! Above mid-level volume you clearly hear the difference between standard set-up. Test it with a high-quality original CD, not radio or MP3s, crispy sound!!

I have bussines radio (non nav system) and I must say that sounds very bad. So I'm wondering to install bsw speakers. The pack looks good and fits directly in to original places. Could anybody provide feedback of bsw speakers?

I have Business CD and it was terrible ! I immediately went for the HiFi speaker upgrade (Alpine) and now it is just acceptable and I can live with it. The problem is any alteration or addition will require registering it to system (like adding an harware to computer) and I believe only the dealers can do. However I presume that replacing only speakers will not create any problem. If you are an hifi freak, then I would suggest certainly Harman Kardon upgrade although it costs a fortune. It will only hurt when you are paying then I believe you will forget the pain in a short time.

I just ordered my X1 today!!!!!!!!
Alpine White
17 inch
roof rails
light package
xenon lights
leather interior
sport steering wheel
but still mixed up with the music... and a bit afraid of lifting up carpets to pass wiring through the car for an aftersales hifi. Does anyone know the specs of the Alpine upgrade?

thanks and best wishes for 2011

Hi Konstantinos,

You'd better take the HK option. I regret I didn't have it in X1. But I used to have it another BMW and it's really pure and satisfying.

Indeed take all the options you can
When the car arrives you want everything ready on it.

Happy New Year!

I had a 3 series with standard speaker package and it was ok apart from the sound in the rear of the car. It was just aweful.

I got the HK option on my X1 and it's in a different league. I will never go back to the standard or Hi-Fi option on future purchases.

Hi! they told me that delivery would be 2 full months. I should have it end February early march (I hope).....

The HK sounds great but for the 2,000 it costs in Greece I could turn the car into a soundshow car aftersale!
I was thinking of the hifi or alpine upgrade but I have up till mid next week to give the final specs of the car! The HIFI comes for about 800Euro. but still trying to work out what changes in the car.
The problem is with the usual radio it has a 4x15 output, nothing compared to an aftersale 4x60Watt output, but who want to rip up the dashbord of a new X1

the thing is not the number of speakers (at least for me), but the actual output (LOUD!!!)
