Absolutely lost re. servicing

Little help appreciated here as i am lost. We began leasing the X1 6 months ago and it had just had a "service", whatever that means. It is time to swap the winter tyres out and run the summers so i figure i will do an oil change as i do with my car.

Then it hit me, service is included in the lease agreement so BMW are not going to do anything more than "what's in the book". But there is nothing in the book, anywhere, they basically say to just wait for the car to tell you it is time for a service.

Is this right??

i find this remarkable, winters here touch minus 35, you telling me that oil has to stay in the car until we clock up enough miles for the car to suggest it needs a service??

If this is the case, i still have a question. There's a little blurb in the manual that says "you should do an oil change at least once a year", so if the car doesn't suggest it needs an oil change due to a lack of miles, will BMW still cover this annual oil change?

I tell you what, i'd never buy one of these off lease because once a year is preposterous. I'd think twice a year is a minimum no?

Yes, once a year or roughly every 15k miles, based on fuel consumed. It's been this way since they began "free" maintenance.

Some model year X1's are on a 24000 km, 2 year schedule. The dealer will only cover 1 oil change every 2 years or 24000 kms, which ever comes first. They will however, let you pay for the service yourself and not have an issue with it. I get my oil changed every 7500, the dealer knows this and sets up appointment for it. I use my own oil every time too, they pay for the labour and filter once per year. The rest of the oil changes I pay for and I'm totally ok with that.

I personally don't know about the 24000 or 2 years. Mine is every year for free since I bought it. However, I agree with OP, winter is harsh so I am replacing my oil in the spring and in the fall as well. BMW pays the spring one, I pay the fall one.
I heard all kind of stupid stories, it is dumb to replace the oil how BMW wants. The oil is the life of the engine.

Thanks for the clarification, appreciated.

Well, this has taught me a huge lesson. I am one of those "buy it CPO" guys but I am going to be real careful of anything off lease when service is rolled in, once a year is flat out insane for the sake of saving $100.

Once a year is ok if the car mostly sits and you don't use it as a daily driver. However, even if you drive 2000km a year, the oil must be replaced once a year.
Otherwise, I wouldn't keep one oil change more than 10.000 km.

Just curious, what oil are you using?

Personally I paid for an oil change at the first 2000 miles. By the time the first year had passed since purchase BMW paid for the next one, which still left me a few more thousand before the mileage was up for the scheduled one. Which I then let go another 3500 beyond knowing the oil wasn't that old. Took it back and BMW paid for that one. By the time the annual rolled around again it had been another 7700 miles and they did the "annual" again. But that still left several thousand before the mileage scheduled one which should occur around June or July. Long story short, because I paid for that first one I've been able to get it changed every 7500-8000 miles on the oil. I paid for one, they've covered the rest.

I bought my car used a couple of months ago, and had the oil changed today. It hadn't thrown a service code, but I wanted to have fresh oil for the summer. When I took it in, the dealer said it didn't need the oil changed for another 3000kms, but my "eye & finger-tip" analysis said it was time.
I've run synthetic in my vehicles since synthetic hit the market, and I've never gone more than 7500kms between oil changes. I figure with the amount of money I have invested in my car, a hundred bucks every 4-6 months is a small price to pay for peace of mind
