North American engine choices
From what I read, the xDrive28i will have 258 bhp, which means that it's the same engine found in the X3 and X5 xDrive30i, not the 230 bhp engine found in the 128i/328i/528i. Does that mean that xDrive28i will be a top of the line model? Or will there be an xDrive35i??

re North American engine choices
I think the xDrive28i will be the only option. I read somewhere that there will be a xDrive25i version as well (see a few posts below), but I have not seen that confirmed anywhere. In Europe the Diesel versions xDrive20D and
xDrive23D are quite popular. RE BT |

I understand that they are considering a diesel version as well, but the 28i will be the first one available at launch. (Personally, I won't consider it unless it does come with a diesel....) |

Throughout the world, this car is more of a diesel car. In almost all regions, there are more diesel offerings than petrol models. I think the NA market will only see the 28i and the maybe the 23d as well. I'm guessing BMW may be waiting on the 23d motors until they update it a bit (I know it's not old), then federalize it for use it in the X1, 1er (F20), and 3er (F30). I don't think they have enough incentive to go through the costs of federalizing an engine just for one (niche) model, especially given diesel sales.

It will be a X3 35i model but not a X1...
I think that current petrol engines from X1 will be replaced with the 4 cyl turbo engines from the next 1/3 series with a better power, torque, fuel economy.. |

I won't buy it unless there's a diesel offering - we are looking for a substantial mileage increase, not the status quo - or even 35 mpg - it should be over 40 mpg. I'd hate to have to go to Audi after owning BMWs for nearly 40 years.
