It's cheaper than a 3 series wagon because it is so small. If you have kids the old X1 is very, very small. We went out last weekend and the mrs knees were near her chin (with a fresh c-section wound) as we had the rear facing seat behind her. My 4 year old was behind me and bitching it was too tight. Meanwhile, we had the stroller in the boot (trunk), it is quite large as it accepts the child seat and BARELY fits, even then you cannot carry anything else.

The new X1 addresses basically all of this but is monumentally expensive, so we are looking at gussied up Escapes instead, otherwise known as Lincoln MKC.

Fusion if you want a wagon and can live without a huge tablet screen as so on, look at 9-3 wagons, 2008-2010. The 08 has a Turbo V6 option, only look at AERO models though, not base.

No warranty but the right size and cheap as chips. VERY refined drivetrain (makes the BMW 2T and 8SPD feel like a tractor) but yeah, it's not a huge fan of corners.

Thanks Alfisti...and thanks for your guidance on my other post! Funny about the rear seat space. I'm at the other end of the spectrum now...kids gone, and I won't need the space because my wife has an Audi Q5, and we take that when nec. All i need to get into this is my road bike, or an elec keyboard on occasion, or a snowboard....all of which are no issue. I'm really stuck on CPO. I should trust the older vehicles....but guess i'm not built that way, and I do no repair work myself.

It's not just "trust", it's math. Yeah you can CPO a 3er wagon for $40K or buy an older car for $15K, if you are ok with the older car (not missing the trinkets) then really, it could blow up 5 times before you're out real money.

A bike is actually tough to carry, consider an XC70?

I've actually got a similar situation to you Alfisti. My wife doesn't mind the space at all but I do find it a little small when I have the car seat behind me. We drive three adults and an infant on a regular basis, have a large stroller and the only time we're short on space is during Costco runs. But then the stroller goes on its side and everything fits in quite nicely (for those we do remove the trays and leave them at home)

Well the three adults and a baby I'm going to leave for you to figure out what works comfortably. It's not exactly luxuriously roomy but it's certainly enough and not very tight. I will say that my wife is 5' tall so she's not short leg room sitting in front of the infant seat.

As for the trunk, leave the trays at home, stand the stroller upright on its side, and you've got loads of room. Of course my Costco runs and yours could be drastically different, but at one point I did have some $400 of food in the trunk - that was a tight fit.

Who buys an X1 for driving dynamics?

OP here is just laughable, new car looks tremendously better then outgoing X1...not to mention much better interior.

If you prurchased X1 because you looked for driving dynamics than you are looking at the wrong model.

Take a look around this forum and you'll find plenty of reasons that the X1 has great driving dynamics. No one is saying this is the best car for this but the new car is much worse, which is laughable because it's a BMW and this is one area where the company should not be moving backwards in.

For many people, myself included, the E90 based E84 is just the right combination of driving dynamics and size/style. The 3 series wagon is too big, the sedan is too small, and the X3 is too much SUV. The X1 is small, nimble, great driving feel, and not too small in the cargo area.

That's ridiculous. For a hatch with some ground clearance it drives VERY well when hustled.

Ha, our E84 had better driving dynamics than our F30. Wife already wants something else. F series can't die soon enough. And this is the LCI F30, previous to the LCI was appallingly bad.

Finally got around to checking out the 2016 X today. Both Xline and M Sport. Wow. Given the many comments/reviews on how much of an improvement the F48 interior is over the e84, I was surprisingly disappointed. The standard F48 seats are tiny. I'm fairly small framed so they were just OK for me but I can't imagine them being comfortable for larger people. The seating position is now much higher, but seems its trying too hard to be a larger SUV, but something seems wrong with this setup in such a small vehicle. Door trims are now nicer, but I found the console to be somewhat cheap/flimsy looking, and its low position and layout a bit awkward. And I did not find the switch gear to be a step up, but actually cheaper looking/feeling. I did like the M Sport much better ... has a much sportier look/feel inside and out ... particularly the sport seats are much better. But overall its the same new "small SUV" vs the "hot hatch/wagon" the e84 was. I'm going to cherish my 35i for as long as it will last.

For a similar price the MKC is a nicer vehicle in every way except for going around corners.

I wasn't dazzled inside the '16 we looked at; the standard seats were smallish, and the interior didn't impress.
My X1 is just the right size for me; I like driving our X3, and it makes a better travel car due to its capacity. But the X1 is just big enough to be practical,and it is still a sweet handler. I'm going to have a hard time finding a replacement, a long way down the road.

My wife is 5'8 and I am 6'1". I basically never drove it with my both my wife and my daughter. The boot cover was all damaged because the stroller was to big for it. With 6 months still to go before forward facing car seat I gave up and got a new X3. With the big discounts I got fully loaded X3 for the price of a new X1. Sat in a new X1 and a lot more space and the quality off materials is a lot better. Looks a a lot nicer.

The X3 is like two levels higher in luxury. than the old X1. No cheap plastic. No jarring when going over a small bump. I can sit comfortably in front of the car seat. Not as fun to drive and the steering is loose.

I think the old X1 great car to drive but it is the only car I have owned that I disliked. I think it was overpriced. Might make more sense if it cost 10000 dollars less.

A whole lot of truth to your last comment on price!

I picked up a beautiful CPO 35i w 10K miles (fully loaded including adaptive Xenon) for $15K below MSRP. Quickly replaced the run flats w Michelin Pilot A/S 3 tires and HOLY COW this is an absolutely PHENOMENAL car to drive. The N55 is an engineering masterpiece. But would I have bought it if it was the original price?... tough call, I would have likely ponied up the extra $$ to get into a Macan S instead.

The dilemma of the e84 is that it's never really going to satisfy someone looking for a practical small SUV. Because its not that at all ... it's a hot hatch/wagon and a damn fine one ... though arguably overpriced and let's be honest, somewhat impractical. I'm one of those "Avant lovers" and the X1 is ideal. My kids our all out of their car seats now, I don't need the space. We use my wife's 8 passenger SUV to haul 3 kids and gear when we need it. I want something that FUN to drive, is a little more practical than a sedan in that I can carry a few people or things on occasion.

But the f48 has an even bigger dilemma on its hands. It's now a "small SUV" without any real "hotness" AND its even more overpriced than the e84 was for what you get. The X3 makes a lot more sense now (especially the 35i if you want to trade off some practicality for hotness). And this seems to be why Consumer Reports has panned the f48 ... it's way overpriced for what you get and its not that exciting.

Finally got around to taking that photo. Went to visit relatives over the weekend so had to remove the trays to make more space. This is how the stroller sits to make room in the trunk.
