Gap between rear seats and parcel shelf

My father has a September 2014 X1 and after folding down the rear seats has noticed, after putting the seats back, that there is now a few centimetres gap between the back of the seats and the shelf.

He has never noticed this before and a friend with the same X1 does not have such a gap.

There doesn't seem to be any way to adjust. We must be missing something obvious. Any ideas?

Thanks.

The angle of those seat backs is adjustable. You need to lift up the release lever to change it.

Thanks for the answer, he took it into BMW today as there was no way the seats could be moved and they compared it to the used one they had and it also had this gap!!!

They say it's normal, for this specific model.

Anyone here have a gap?
Model is 20d SE 2014, September build.

Hmm, there should be two pieces to the shelf: a large one at the back, and a much smaller one right behind the seat. Do you have both of them? If the smaller one were missing, it would certainly look like a gap back there.

Yes,we have both pieces. The gap is between the the smaller piece right behind the seat and the seat.

It just don't seem right and a friend with the same model year X1 does not have a gap.

Only difference we know of is that he has leather seats.

Ours has the same gap (2013 build year/2014 model year, leather seats). And it looks like the shelf in yours and ours in the correct place. Notice the contour of the shelf make one the side with the rest of the interior?

Thanks, for that.
Do you have leather seats in yours?

Reason I ask, someone who says they don't have such a gap, does have leather.

I finally went out and put my rear seats up, and my 2015 X1 also has this gap. And it has leather seats (Sport Line). Maybe some models have a differently-shaped shelf piece?

Thanks for taking the time.
If I find a X1 with no gap, I shall let you know.

Garage List
Normal...about an inch with the rear seats in their furthest recline position.

I keep my seats a little more vertical (full recline is uncomfortable IMHO), but yes, a little gap is normal, and mine are leather.

Having slept in the back of my X1 at a Mountain Bike event at the weekend [pretty uncomfortable for a 6 footer] i can confirm that when the seats were back up, there is a pretty big gap. Leather seats, UK.

Thanks to all recent responders, I haven't already acknowledged. Went into a local dealership and all their X1s had gaps, including salesman's own. He rang his wife to confirm
And yet my father's friend's X1 does not have a gap.

he intends to contact BMW Germany, see what they say. If he hears back, i will post up here.

Mine are in the fully upright position though - not tried in the reclined position [2 kiddie seats fitted and need them to be in upright spot]. Guess if they were reclined, that gap would pretty much go.

I'm quoting, as it is not my car:-

"doesn't look nice."
"shouldn't be there."
"Suggests a fault."

2nd/3rd points, I think, backed up by the fact not everyone has a gap/same size gap.
