X-drive working?

Driving to work in my 328xiT wagon and the snow was falling pretty hard in the northeast.

Saw an X1 stuck at the bottom of a hill in Lowell, MA unable to get up the hill. Assuming that the person was running on all-seasons, the only wheels turning were the rears. Fronts were not grabbing or spinning at all.

I told the guy his x-drive was not working, but he said the car is brand new and didn't have any error lights.

Anyone else experience this? My old Volvo R would lose AWD and there would be no warning message.

(btw, the wagon with snows had no issue with this hill, but I attribute this to the rubber).

That wouldn't disable the front wheels, it could really only be an sDrive, and really only one wheel should have been spinning.

Cheaped out? My s drive was $44k, M Sport and most every option. Total waste for x drive here where it never snows. I had an X5 and 2 X3's before and never used them in snow. It's not cheating out if you want better handling, lower weight, better gas mileage and a faster X1.

Agreed...
What's more likely is the guy didn't know his X1 wasn't an X-Drive.

When the OP told him his X-Drive wasn't working, the X1 owner DIDN'T say,
"My X1 is only 2WD." He told him, "the car is brand new and didn't have any error lights."

No mention of whether 2 or 4 wheel drive by the owner.

Makes me think that the X1 owner is kinda stupid. I mean, he WAS stuck at the bottom of a hill.

Don't worry man, we all "cheaped out"

There are folks who want rear wheel drive in the vehicles over AWD, especially if they live in areas there's rarely snow on the ground, like around here. My dealership only had one 28i in AWD, all the rest were RWD (probably 7).

Personally I like AWD and accelerating through corners vs drifting the rear, and in the rain it's just as great to have as the snow, and it does rain here.

I didn't cheap out. Not a single choice I made was based on costs.

And I'd want both RWD and AWD. Older cars had a manual lever where you could turn 4WD on or off. I'd love to see that again, so I can get the best of both worlds - the agility and better mileage of RWD, while being able to use AWD only when I want it.

Performance Control is supposed to be the best of both worlds, which sold me on the M Package. I've been quite pleased in the rain and on the twisties. The UltimateDrive app has given us some great routes to travel.

Dude, I'm not talking about you >_> it's just that guy living in the northeast with rwd.
And I do Apologize if I accidentally hurt your feelings.

Kind of a joke. In that now that we drive "the cheapest" BMW, to anyone else they say we cheaped out - haha

Our 20i sDrive was €46k
And sDrive is way more fun in snow and rain, just get rid of those crappy all seasons and put proper winter tires underneat when snowing.
