Who's still on FB???

Call me an old man or whatev, but I stepped away from Facebook over two years ago and it seems that almost everyone I talk to has/is stepping away from FB as well. I'm a bit curious to hear who's still riding the FB bandwagon? And if not, what made you step away?

For me and a couple of friends we found that there we were all nauseated by a few choice groups of people who made our decision to avoid FB all too easy (as identified below)...
- The socially awkward aunt that you avoid in real life who leaves out-of-the-blue totally uncalled for comments on your photos/wall
- The token uneducated 27 year old college dropout cousin who still lives at home and loves to share his unsolicited off color political views
- The random High School colleague who PM's you about a "great business opportunity" he has for you to make extra side money
- The all too common, all too typical (and vomit worthy) humble bragger/my life is awesome/one upper

I have been off of Facebook for about 4 years and I gotta say it was probably one of the best things I have ever done socially.

It never gets old when you meet people and they say "Facebook me" and then I reply, "I don't have a Facebook.". The look on their face is priceless, like I have been lost in the Stone Age for the past 10 years.

I like not being sent Farmville and vampire requests all day, as well as no longer having to deal with the people that find me and add me as a friend after I haven't talked to them since high school, etc. If you don't have my cell phone number, there's a reason for it.

My mother bitches to my husband in facebook that I never contact her anymore. Her parting words and not even said to me were lets talk in ten years. I'm just honoring the promise.

I like antisocial media. I've made the best of friends via this way.

I am probably going to break the tone of this thread's replies so far and say that I am... There's still the human touch despite it being a bunch of random shares and whatnot, and there are some people on there that I probably wouldn't contact with other methods anyway... Like my semi-estranged mom that doesn't give a fuck about me for the stuff I want her involved in, but meddles way too deep into stuff that I REALLY wish she wouldn't (office filing cabinets, past dates that were |-><-| THIS close to becoming a relationship, etc.).

It sure takes the boredom out of reading stuff from people you don't know, considering certain aspects of IT work gets mundane quick... Not to mention I am the social media admin for 3 FB pages, and so far even without much effort I have tripled the amount of likes on a 1K like page, but don't get much $ for it (but it's money). I am also part of a group that only posts its news and announcements on an FB group as well, which is actually the only thing that is preventing me from cutting FB off completely.

Besides, none of the substitutes have gained enough traction for me to switch over to; G+ was a hit or miss, Twitter is too limiting, I haven't used LinkedIn to its full potential, Instagram is only a point of ridicule and parodies for me, I hardly use Snapchat or Vine, and most importantly, who the 'ell do you know on Ello?

I use FB as a blog. Record of what I buy and what I sell.

I'm on it. It's a quick and easy way for my friends and family to see my kids.

I will say that my mother is annoying as hell with it. I'll call my brother on his birthday but my mom will still call me and say "I can't believe you didn't wish your brother a happy birthday..." thinking Facebook is the only method of doing so...

i spend pretty much all of my waking hours tied to facebook. It has killed forums and is essentially the new reality for most young people. if you want to engage people for business in a social selling environment you have to be a hardcore facebooker.

many of my friends and family have moved on but only those without any professional benefit from social media.

i would go so far as to say the internet (facebook being a primary outlet) is more important than reality; by that i mean your face to face interaction at any given moment.

My FB is very limited. About a dozen "friends" who are either very close friends or family, which is just Wifey and my younger brother. I also use AdBlock Plus and have my FB settings as locked down as I can get it. I don't see Farmville crap or other invitations and I see no ads. My FB bookmark takes me to my own timeline, so I don't see "news" from others unless I go click on their images under the friends section. My best friend has moved far to the right politically and uses FB to voice his, um, displeasure with Dems. I'm an equal opportunity grumbler when it comes to politics. I'm in the middle and really don't like either side. But I don't need to see non-stop anti-Obama crap all the time. Other friends have kids and I don't need to see non-stop baby/kid pics either. The only thing I post to FB are pics from Flickr and the occasional sports "hoo-hah!" and maybe happy birthday to someone.

The one thing that has me thinking about dumping FB is the death of my other brother back in November. His FB page is still up and there's really not much you can do about it. So far it's just his friends posting memorial stuff, but it could get taken over by spammers and FB won't do shit. Luckily he limited his to just a few friends as well. Wifey has my FB login creds with explicit instructions to kill the page if I can't for any reason.

I only use FB to see what my family is doing back home. Sister is going to be having a kid, and she posts all her photos on there. Chit chat with some of my cousins from back home, few friends.


Other than that, I'll look at it when I'm on the shitter. That's literally the only time I go on FB. When I'm taking a duke.

FB is for my family and friends, especially friends I have met in other countries. I still have quite a few folks from Germany on my FB friend list and we shoot each other messages every now and then. TBH, I probably wouldn't communicate with them any other way.

As for actually using it, I really don't. Every now and then I post a picture of my dogs or something for friends/family to see, but I don't use it much. It's also set to super private so people can't see my stuff. You can see my cover photo (my house with the address edited out) and my profile pic (my wife and me). Unless you're a friend, that's all you're going to see.

I was introduced to facebook by a college friend back in 2004 when it first launched.

You see, back then facebook was very different. It was for college students only. You had to be enrolled in college to be accepted.

It was a good way to meet and socialize with those kids you saw on campus but you never got to talk to. Keep in mind this was 2004 so cell phones and text messages weren't that major. We used it to organize campus events, group projects, rate our professors and classes.

In 2007 when i graduated, i quickly closed my account. The facebook i once knew was becoming something else, they allowed anyone to join including high schoolers, your mom & dad, companies now have 'Like' pages, celebrities, pornstars, farmville etc.

In 2009/2010, i went back to facebook simply because ALL my friends and relatives will barely answer phone calls or return emails or text messages. So facebook was the only way to stay in touch. I also have family overseas which costs major $$$ to call, so i use facebook to message them for free.

Nowadays, i just use social media as a way to stay on latest topics and trends.

Skype is a good way to talk to folks overseas and not pay a bundle. I've used it to call landlines in the UK several times. It works out to pennies per minute. I bought $10 worth of time about 8 years ago and still have just under $5. If you talk longer and more often, I have to think it would still be relatively cheap. My calls to the UK were crystal clear. I doubt the person on the other end knew I was talking on a laptop.

Yes Skype was and is still excellent for overseas communication. Facebook was more convenient due to time differences.
