Day 1 with 2014 X1 - Trans. Malfunction

Picked up my new X1 today and on the way home I stopped to get a couple of things at the store. Go to leave and on the way out of the parking lot we can feel a hard shift in the transmission then a "Transmission Mailfunction!" error. Park it again. Error says that a restart may clear it, however after many restarts and long waits the car will no longer come out of park. Roadside has a tow truck (flat bed) coming in 3 hours to get it and take it back to the dealer.

Anyone familiar with this? I can't find any recent (since 2010) discussions around transmission malfunctions.

Thanks.

Rob

And a follow up...how do you override the transmission and get it into neutral. Wasn't easy getting it up on the truck.

i dont belive you can get the 8sp into N if you are having a problem since unlike the 6sp the 8sp is an electronic transmissions compared to a manual AT.

Replacing Car

They offered to replace the car since a whole new transmission was required. Other than the obvious hassle they are doing everything right. Lets see if they can find the same or similar car that we are happy with and make that transaction smooth.

Sorry to hear about this breakdown. This is the first time I've read of this. Hopefully, it is an isolated case. Curious... Did you order (customize) your car from Germany or did you pick one in stock at the dealership?

BTW, you said it was difficult. But, how did they get onto the flatbed w/o getting into N?

They had what I wanted on the lot. It was produced on 5/13/13. I imagine it is isolated otherwise others would be posting.

To get it on the flat bed he started by using a winch to just drag it up. Which resulted in a snapped cable when it was about 4 inches from being on the truck. Luckily no one was hurt. The front wheels were spinning so the second "regular" truck, after dragging it off the truck, picked it up by the back wheels and pushed it up on the flat bed.

Wow, sorry to hear that. Likely (hopefully?) an isolated incident. I haven't read anything about that kind of failure but mechanical stuff can happen. The key is how the dealer/manufacturer responds. Sounds like the dealership is doing the right thing. Take them up on the new car, and if you can/need to, don't hesitate to order exactly what you want. I had to endure 8 weeks of waiting, but worth it in the end so far.

Yikes! These random things can happen to even the best built vehicles. I'd take them up on a new vehicle. Then you have peace of mind that you're not dealing with a repaired vehicle.

Good luck with everything.

Good to hear that the dealer is trying to make it right. If what you want has to be ordered then order it and ask them to provide you a loaner car until the new car comes in. Sorry to hear about the problem.

Pictures and Video

Attached is a picture of how close he got to getting it on the truck the first time before the winch cable broke. Then a video of how they ultimately got it up on the flat bed can be found here:

We are still waiting to hear what they have come up with for the replacement. Meanwhile we are driving around an X3 loaner. Kind of surprised I haven't heard anything but I'm not in a huge hurry - happy to put miles on a loaner although they have my money!

Thanks for all of the notes. Interesting to see how it will play out.

Scary!
I bet the differential and the transfer case are damaged from putting on the tow truck

Yeah, I'm shocked that there isn't any sort of manual override to put the transmission in N for this kind of emergencies. I found these tips. Will they work on the X1?

If this happens in a car out of warranty, the damages could be substantial from the simple fact of putting the car on a flat bed, if you are unable to put it in Neutral.

They do not work. No override under the shifter boot. We looked for about 45 minutes before we decided to drag it. We also looked in the drivers foot well by the hood latch as I found on the some 7 series the override was there. Also looked behind the glovebox where the fuses are but nothing there either.

I guess there MAY be some screw under the car but who can/will safely get under there to get to it. It probably also requires removing all of the covers under there.

I forgot to ask when I was in. I'll try to remember next time as that may be the most useful information that comes out of this whole ordeal.

Still waiting to hear from the dealer on the replacement. They left me a VM this morning and we are playing phone tag. Hope to find out soon!

Garage List
You could always crawl under the car and physically disconnect the linkage and move it into neutral

Did you know that there is a manual override to put it into neutral? You just need an Allen key from the toolbox provided in the car. Lift the shift nob and shift boot and there should be a white cap you need to remove and then insert the Allen key.

Source: owners manual and personally used it on my 135i with DCT (full electric shifter) when my battery died.

The service manager told me the same thing when I asked him yesterday. The night when I had the tow the two of us looked in there for 45 minutes and couldn't find anything. I guess it was in there and just not obvious!

In the X1 owners manual there is no reference to this technique. it only states for the 6sp: see page 64. there is no mention of how to get a stuck shifter on the 8sp into N.

New car

Picked up the new car tonight. Only the trim color was different and it had the upgraded radio. Higher MSRP but they gave me the same out the door price. The dealer did everything right. Interesting to see how they market the old car.

rcw119: I guess what I would like to know is whether there indeed is an override for the 8-sp steptronic so the car can be put in neutral if it is disabled. Can anyone verify this?

When you think about it, just running out of gas or having a dead battery could put one in the same situation as you were in with no recourse for flatbedding the car.

I pulled the shifter boot on my S-Drive X1 and there was nothing in the housing that would suggest an override mechanism. Likewise the manual specifically states that Park can only be disengaged if the car is running and there is no reference to a manual override.

It would probably be of value for the readers to get a definitive answer on this.

Really good to hear that the dealer stepped up and really took care of you! Enjoy the new car!
