HOWEVER - BMW decided to delay everything and the timing didn't work. the X3 is a girls car and useless so I got the X5

I don't think there is any comparison between the two -completely different market segments.
shame BMW NA couldn't get them over there in line with Europe.. Sounds like it would have been ideal for you. X5 a lovely car though. I personally wanted the X6, but it's still too big for our roads and 4 seats was the killer blow (wife + 2 small children).

Music means lot to me.

for me also .. had the USB input on previous car and now this one .. could not live without it. should be standard on ANY and ALL cars going fwd. Who uses CD's anymore? And CD changers just take up space.

$1k seems a bit much for a USB port. The world loves to overcharge eh !!

And interior pics will come this weekend .. once I actually see the car in the day-light again.

Nice to see a higher spec one. Need to decide soon what to replace my 1 Coupe with, and need more space and rear doors now.

Was going for a 320d, but seriously thinking about a X1 s20d. However, been pretty unimpressed with a couple I've found at dealers, both low spec examples.

Come to the conclusion that big alloys and leather is a must!

oh mate.. like I said, I ordered it blind from pics I'd seen on the net. wasn't even available at the time to spec on line. did it at dealers back in August.
on the launch (Oct 24) the dealer invited me down to see the one they had in the showroom. It was the most BASIC car from BMW I'd ever seen. It was awful and I nearly canned it there and then. Black and red cloth, no nav, no pana-roof .. nothing. i felt so gutted. but stuck with it in the hope that the one I had specced would be good enough. when i saw it on the day i picked it up, i was over the moon. and since i've had it i genuinely believe it's possibly best car i've owned. and i'd come from the E60 M5. am enjoying it so much. you MUST tick the leather (as with all bimmers), and at least put some factory 18's on it (or of course aftermarket). These were the best ones you could get from BMW, and they look lovely in the flesh. I promise you, if you spec it right, you will love it.

Fair play for ordering it blind! Almost as bad (but not quite) with the Coupe, had only seen one in the flesh before it arrived.

Yep, definitely a contender. AW 2wd single turbo, leather, 18's and the bits I want is £27k and a bit. 320d M Sport well over £32k. Plus more flexibility with the hatch for bikes and stuff.

One question - the USB, how well does it integrate with iPod/iPhone? Can you control it from the vehicle controls? Track names displayed?

completely integrated with the iDrive. brings up the lot on the screen. Playlists, Genre, Albums, Artists, search. When playing it displays the Artist, Album, Track, and has a bar (like the ipod) for the duration of the track. Controllable from the steering wheel also. I had it on the M5, but it was the previous generation of iDrive .. and it worked perfectly on that one even.

All it is, is the preperation for the BMW bike rack accessory. So it's basically the fixings attached to the car ready to go. It's a £65 option. The bike rack has to be bought seperately at a cost of £350

absolutely beautiful X1. I can't wait for the X1 to reach the USA. In fact i am seriously considering trading my E90 M3 for one for a number of reasons - I live in an area where winter weather is a factor, much better fuel mileage (I drive almost 100 miles everyday for work), and I'm no longer have the the funds to track it (would need to modify in order to have fun with it) as i previously had a modified E46 M3 that a tracked all the time. I feel it is a waste to have an M3 and not take it to the track.

As hard as it would be to give up my M3, the X1 looks like a promising alternative that is practical yet fun to drive (I've heard it has great handling which is most important to me). It is good to know that as a previous ///M owner, you are enjoying your X1.
