Taking off in M2

I feel that launching in 2nd feels a lot faster than 1st.
The first gear on the 8 speed feels too short for a quick get away.
Is my assdyno broken?
Will this damage the transmission?

Sassoon is broken. No it won't, physics will tell you that acceleration is much faster in first

I know acceleration is faster, but it feels like you lose all the benefits gained during the 1-2 gear change.
For some reason the 8 speed 1-2 is slow relative to the 2-3 change.

If you read any of the posts regarding people who take their cars to the drag strip, they (almost exclusively) launch in M2 not M1....

Under part throttle the 1-2 change is slow. Torque multiplies in lower gears. You'll be faster at the strip in sport mode not manual mode. The 1-2 shift at wot will be faster than you can change it manually.

With the 8-speed transmission, I didn't think it was possible to launch in M2 - it will auto-change to M1 when stopped.

It stops in 1, but pull back the gearlever once (it will show M2) to take off in second.

I was reading a magazine today which stated that the 8sp in normal mode will take of in second but in sport mode will use first. Unless I'm bat shit crazy, I've always felt that first was always the takeoff gear in any mode.

I have also read on other BMW forums that other BMW 's with the 8-speed will not go to M1 when you stop while in manual mode. It will stay in M2 and you have to push the gear lever forward to take off in M1.
I am 100% sure our cars always start in first.
