Thermostat

My 2014 s28i throw a 'Service Engine Soon' yellow light, I scan to see what it was and the OBDII gave me a P0597 reading as follow: Thermostat Heater Control Circuit Open. Has anyone had this problem with the thermostat? I was going to buy a thermostat and R&R the bad one, but probably I should take the car to the dealer first just in case it could be something more than the thermostat my OBDII scanner is a generic type. The car mileage at the present time are 58,000.

OK, I did go to the Dealer, even though I removed the SES light from the dash with my 'Generic' scanner. The rep. did mentioned that BMW do have an issue with the thermostat, also they do have a back order, but he said the thermostat do function like it suppose to except is always open, and it does give a fault to the ECU. I asked about a recall on the part, he didn't know. I inquired how much it will cost for the shop to hook-up their scanner and troubleshoot the problem, $175.

Anyway, I did order a thermostat not thru the Dealer, $72. The best part of all this in November of this year the car is scheduled for the re-call airbag to R&R.

I've heard a few people having bad thermostats, so might just be that.

I'm assuming you're out of warranty, so consider going to an independent shop instead.

And depending if you have a generic OBD scanner which can't read the BMW specific codes, then think about getting one that can. I've had good luck with Carly over Bluetooth to an OBD adapter.

Good luck, those thermostats are perpetually back ordered.

Yes, out of warranty long time ago, plus I do all the maintenance and any add to my car. I checked other forums and it seems is not a fluke case BMW do have a problem with that specific thermostat.

I'll consider to buy a better scanner to support the X1.

I think you are right, I checked with the realoem catalog, and the thermostat has been superseded many times.

I'll go to the dealer and find out if is a recall on the thermostat if not how much for the fix, and when my airbag is scheduled to be install.

I received mixed information from different bmw representatives about the thermostat being volunteer recalled. Mine was replaced recently. Told them i need it to pass smog check for registration.

Yes but I'm still under warranty. You should check with BMW first if there's a recall.

There's definitely an issue with the thermostats. My '13 sDrive28i threw a P0597 code a few weeks ago, so I took it in to the dealer and they replaced it. The woman at the SA desk next to me also had a broken thermostat that was getting replaced.

(FWIW, the code popped up at about 61k miles, and was covered under my 6yr/100k mi Extended Service Contract for a $50 deductible. It's a $500 repair if out of warranty.)

OUCH! $500...Strong reason I'm doing the R&R my self. Thanks for the info, hope it will be a recall at the near future.
