Destroyed a Pontiac GTO and a SVT Cobra at the strip today (video)

Went down to the drag strip today and we have our first 12 second X1. Absolutely destroyed a Pontiac GTO and an older SVT cobra. Only got three runs in because they were running a stupid vintage racing car night and we had to wait literally an hour in between runs. I should have at least another 1mph trap in her as she was bogging hard in 2nd gear and my IAT's were close to 140 due to heat soak in the lanes.

Hopefully this opens people's eyes to how quick a X1 can be. And this isn't even with downpipes.

Cobb tubed WRX

Camaro SS on Slicks

Cobra run (launched HARD and perfectly for once): *

Pontiac GTP (bolt on, maybe tuned)

GTO Run (was bogging in 2nd gear, you can hear it, but still walked away from him):

Was a lot of fun, tons of people came up asking questions about the car. They were totally shocked at how fast it was.

The Cobra didn't let off he just wasn't that fast. Your 2004 is much faster. I think his is a 1999 or something. The GTO may have let off towards the end it seems like, but only in the last second or two. I out-launched him because of AWD, but he was keeping up with me pretty good until I started to pull away and then it seems like he let off.

But guys....one thing to keep in mind. I am using very high octane fuel, if you know what I mean...

I might be going back Wednesday...will take some more vids. Debating starting a website www.yougotbeatmymysuv.com and posting "wall of shame" videos

On our cars the launch is key since we will have lower trap speeds (heavy and not very aerodynamic, plus we have the bad midpipes that have secondary cats where the normal 335's don't).

Brake-boost to 2500RPM and launch in 1st gear, shift at 5700RPM. I was cutting 1.75 60ft times, which is basically where I won the race against people that were doing 2.2s. Every .1 seconds in the 60ft is good for .2s total e.t.

So in other words, a 1.7s 60ft time with a a 107 trap speed will get you 12.7s. But if you mess up the launch and do a 2.0, your time will be 13.3s even with the identical 107mph trap speed. The GTO and Cobra were getting over 2.0s 60ft, so they had no chance.

I would have thought that launching in 2nd would have given more go.

Do you have stability control off, or just traction?

Mojo stone cold sober, I'm just put off by your comment "stupid vintage cars". Leaving the stupid part out of your comment would have had me reframe from calling you a punk. Frankly I raced vintage cars that would blow your station wagon away! Tidy up your language and have fun!

That was me, and I fail to see what's so bad about that question (which was to Paradoxical3, not to you). Starting in second is a common enough launch technique, and the 35i is one of the few automatics that will let you do it.

Maybe a good technique for some cars but the X1 3.5i isn't one of them.
Launch from 2nd = slow Launch

Gah! How can you post a thread like this without sharing with us the mods you've done.

Far from me to say it would be faster (which is why I asked doxy3 in the first place), but what's your basis for saying it's slower on a 35i, given that you have 28i where doing it isn't possible?

It's definitely not going to be good for the car, as you have to keep rev and brake at the same time, and drop the brake. But it certainly works, and does not feel slower, if you time it well enough not to get an automatic downshift into first. I haven't measured it, so it might be slower. Have you seen any measurements, since you make this claim?

Personal experience with my 2008 335i with same ZF 6 sp. transmission as well X1 3.5i loaner I've been driving for the past 4 days. It doesn't take a stopwatch to know there's a profound difference.

Apparently it does, as I cannot say it feels any slower.
Your launch technique might be quite different from mine, though.
