Driving under 80km/h for the first 8000km required?

Hi all
I had received my new BMW X1. What a great start of the new year! Very happey so far.
I have a question on driving speed should restrict to under 80km/h for the first 8000km. This is normally the case for a new car to protect the engine. I had asked the same question to the dealer and the reply for him is no, you don't need to do so. I would like to have a 2nd opinion from people here,What do you think?

This is all covered in the owner's manual.

Yeap, you are right.

Found it on the hand book: up to 2000km, for a diesel engine, do not exceed 3500 rpm and 150km/h.

So the dealer didn't pass on the rigth info.

Also vary the speed and rpms if possible. But don't get bent out of shape if you don't follow it exactly.

Simon,

Breaking in an engine is not about speed but engine rotations per minute !

Although all modern engines are broken in before being installed, avoid the red zone, and try to switch gears below 1800 RPM for the first 2500 kms.
Also watch the oil level, as a brand new engine might tend to be thirsty in that department;

I thought that all BMW engines were bench run in before being installed

That's exactly what I've written just above.

Thats seems a bit excessive. 80km/hr is not exactly going to get you anywhere

I agree with the other posts, keep it below 3500rpm (on a diesel) for the first 800 miles (1200km). From then on you can gradually increase RPM's. Modern engines don't need the "seating" that old engines did, tolerances are much higher.

You are welcome, thats whats so great about this forum

Oh, and as Gatekeeper says keep you oil topped up in the beginning. A new diesel uses a fair bit for the first few 1000 km's.

Just for interest its probably more important for tyres to be run in nowadays, rather than engines. Modern tyres need about 500 miles before they achieve maximum performance.
