Car wash mode - necessary?

I noticed in my owners manual that when you go through a car wash you're supposed to put the key in the ignition slot and turn the engine off or something. Is this really necessary? I've gone through several car washes and haven't noticed any problems with my car rolling through.

Not sure about going through a car wash, but I can tell you I hand washed it with the fob in my pocket. When the water would hit the handle the car would lock then unlock the whole time water touched the handles. The next time I left it in the car and no problems. Hope this gives you what you want.

I've noticed that same problem and have ended up putting the keys in the garage far away enough from the car so that they are not detected. I wondered what in the heck was going on the first time it happened
