17" wheels on an M-Sport?

Hi, All. This is my first post here!

I am thinking about getting my wife an X1 for Christmas since she drove one several months ago and fell in love with it. I was going to order one the way she wanted it but I don't have time to do that unfortunately. Then my dealer found one in CA but it will cost me nearly $1k additional to get it to Denver. While I was at my dealer on Saturday, I looked at a 2014 xDrive 28i M-Sport that has most of everything she wants but it has the 19" wheel & tires on it. Frankly, it looks fantastic but I know it will be horrid on ice and snow with those tires. My question is, will 17" wheels fit on the M-Sport without hitting the brakes or anything? Tire Rack has a decent deal on a 17" winter package that says fits but I'm skeptical. I'd like to know about this before I drop down a deposit on it.

Thanks guys!

BTW, The dealer is letting me have it for invoice plus an additional $750 BMW cash. It's about $3k off MSRP. Does this seem like a good deal?

Yes, the winter setup is on my M Sport 17". Tire Rack test fits everything, so if they say the wheel will fit, it will fit.

Will wheels from a 2010 535i fit the X1? We picked up the car tonight and I already found a guy selling a nice set of BMW wheels off his 535i for a great price. I'm planning to go and get them tomorrow but I wanted to make sure they fit first. According to my search, it seems they should. Can anyone confirm?

Which style? Over the years there has been something like 100+ different styles for the 5 series: http://www.bmwstylewheels.com/5

What you need to confirm is the offset for the given width.

Unfortunately the seller was not able to provide the offset and I do not see these wheels in the link provided. The best I can do is this photo if it helps.

I guess another question is will the 2010 535i TPMS sensors work on the '14 X1?

I have a X1 35 M sport with the 19 inch wheels and have Pirelli Sotto Zero winter tires. They are about $1300 from Tire Rack. This is better in the snow then the X3 was with all seasons. I am just up the road from you in Loveland.

Given the tires are off the vehicle have the seller look for the BMW part number as well as the rim size on the inside. With out knowing that info you will need to play the fitment game.

BTW what size of tires on there right now? they look mighty fat for winter tires.

Hi, neighbor!

They are a bit wide as far as winter tires are concerned. I believe they are 245/40R18 run flats. The diameter is similar to the MSport diameter based on the online tire calculator. However, the price is so good that I thought even if the tires end up being too wide, the wheels alone might be worth it. I could swap the tires for a narrower size and sell the ones currently mounted.

I am no expert but while the diameter may be okay I would do some double checking as 245/40 may be too wide for the front.

Is it possible to run a narrower setup on these factory 19's? I was thinking about just purchasing tires for the wheels that are already on it. I haven't looked at the tire sizing calculator to figure this out but I know these wheels are staggered so I don't want to end up with an incorrect diameter with respect to the front and rear. I know that would be bad for the AWD system. I'd like to do a squared setup for rotation purposes but I don't know if this is feasible on 8 & 9" wheels??

Go to Discount Tire they should be able to get the Pirelli Sotto Zeros. Cos BMW in Loveland has a set of 17s with Dunlops that they can sell for $2000. Anything that you do now won't help for the storm that is coming in tomorrow unless one of the Denver dealers has something in stock.

I was told the offset on all wheels should be on the inside. Got new chrome's from U.S.of A. and when I took my standard 17x7.5 off found it's offset after much cleaning of the brake dust away, 34 offset. On the new 18x7.5, same check found 35 offset. Hope this helps.

Yes, try checking on the backside of the spokes.

Pickup these 17" Rials with RFT Blizzaks 225/55R17, including the TPMS sensors and BMW center caps from a local Craigslist seller tonight! 29 offset. I was about to click the buy button on tirerack.com for almost the exact same set and at the last minute I thought... I'll just check Craigslist one more time. I'm glad I did! These things are like brand new with only 3k miles on them. I'm please as punch!

Also, for what it's worth I cannot recommend driving on snow and ice with 19" PZeros even with XDrive. lol. Since I knew I couldn't get the winters installed in time for the storm, I had the wife drive my Saab 97x with Blizzaks and I drove the X1. While I was quite surprised at how well it did with the summer tires on it, stopping the it was "entertaining". I just kept my distance and was always prepared with an "exit plan". I used Eco Pro mode to keep from throwing too much power down at all times. That, mixed with the traction control system, steering and getting it moving was a breeze. It was stopping that was most problematic. Driving with the summer shoes installed was no big deal for me but I would never put my wife in that situation. I had fun with it; although at one point it crossed my mind that even with the PZeros on it, I doubted I could get it to do doughnuts. I didn't try. lol

I'm completely stoked with my score!

Also, I tried to get the seller to tell me what the offset was on the other set but he stopped responding. I can only assume he sold them.
