Had them replaced a few months back. They were squeaking even worse after the change out.. but now that the weather has warmed up. It's gone.

Whatever. I didn't buy the car to impress other people. If this just means I get fresh brake pads every year to put up with a bit of noise I can't really otherwise hear when listening to music... horray! bring it on.

BMW OEM pads always squealed from my '98 e39 528i Touring, '02 326xi e46 to '09 328i e93 cabriolet, in addition to annoying dust brake. My solution? Replaced with aftermarket stuff, here in US, Aekebono Carbon's worked quite well for my '09 328i e93 cabriolet. You can get good high quality pads in addition to the OEM ATE, i.e. Pagid, EBC, etc.. You can do yourself, or use an independent but BMW certified mechanic. Thanks for letting me know that the yet to be introduced US X1 have brake squeal issues. You may also lessen the squeal by hosing the calipers with water. It is not harmful at all to the pads, the heat generated will dry them in not time. Sometimes the squeal is caused by improper "bedding" of the pad material on the rotors. Search on the web for proper "bed" procedures for new pad/calipers.

sorry to hear that... I have put something like 15K miles on my Akebono Cool ceramic pads and I got absolutely no squeaks whatsoever, and minimum dust.

OH My God... people, my squeaking problem has been solve, but worst had came.
The new pads that BMW put in had made grooves all over my rotor!!!!
That's a bit more than 1 year since I've change them.....
Can you guys check your rotor and tell me if they look fine?

No squeaks, but boy, do I get the crunching fingernail-against-blackboard sounds if braking hard. It makes my teeth hurt.
I know better, but still imagine an asbestos cloud from each front wheel.

My 2013 x1 still has a squeaking problem after 6000 miles. Brought it to the dealer. They couldn't repro, but I went in to show them. Similar to all of you - on cold start, typically when reversing. Extremely loud. Wakes up the neighbors.

They supposedly took off all 4 wheels and sanded down the rotors because there's a "film" that will be causing it. Picking it up this afternoon. Hopefully the problem is solved.

What do you all think about their potential solution?

Update: no more squeaks after this service. yay. hopefully that's the last of it.

Mine does squeak every cold days. They told me to apply few hard brakes. But still squeak after several hard brakes. First time I went to dealership they replace the brake system. The second time they put holes on it. The third time dont yet. I need to pick it up today after work. Hope it wont squeak anymore.
