I wish! I'm hoping the squeaking I heard tonight is an isolated incident, but I'll let you guys know over the next few days. Those two days of silent braking was sheer bliss...

I'm not going to read the previous few pages since I last looked, but I've been meaning to update you guys for a while.

Had the car in a couple months ago for the 2 recalls a Check Engine light (my reader said it was an idle air solenoid if I remember correctly, but BMW said it was a fuel evap purge or something, and it was also in for the squeaking brakes.

Prior to taking it in, the brakes were only squeaking when they were cold.. after a bit of driving, it would go away. Now they seem to squeak just about anytime. I haven't bothered telling BMW yet, not interested in wasting my time until the spring, perhaps by then they'll have a proper fix (or maybe one is contained in the previous pages?).

Quick update on our squeaking brakes. I had the X1 out twice in the last two days - both times with multiple stops (and I always made sure they were easy/gradual stops, since that's when the brakes seemed to squeak the most). Not a peep out of them in the last two days. Perhaps the rotors and pads are starting to 'seat' properly. Here's hoping...

Just chiming in on this thread. Brake pads were changed twice with the following part numbers:

Nov 25, 2011
34-11-6-797-858

Jan 31, 2012
34-11-6-799-166

Maintainence was performed at Parkview BMW both times, and we did not specifically ask for the revised parts. So it seems they know what to do on their own

Hi All

Just as a side comment... I've got a brand new 118i at the moment why my X1 is having some work done to it... and the front brakes on this car squeal a lot when braking at low speeds. I got the 118i with a 160 miles on the clock and it's now on 600 with the squealing getting louder.

I'll be glad to get the X1 back!

J.

I had the brake pads replaced this week as well (34-11-6-799-166) and they still squeak, but I haven't driven very far with them yet.

I also had the 2 recall items performed: the PCU reprogramming and the turbo vacuum lines clamp replacement (16-13-1-379-229).

Hey DC - just got the part numbers from the work order. Pads were the same as the first replacement - 8mm pads: 34-11-6-799-166. Rotors (21mm) part number: 34-11-6-854-999. We have been squeak-free for almost a week now - and I love the sound of silence when pulling up to a light! Perhaps replacing both the rotors and pads at the same time has allowed them to 'seat' properly, thus taking away any squeaking... Hope this helps!

Thanks Phil. I'll keep monitoring it as the squeaks are just every now and then. Replacing both makes some sense and might be the ultimate answer.

It was Parkview BMW in Toronto - excellent service! They replaced both the rotors and pads after first replacing the pads only (the squeaking was still there the first time). The squeaking has been gone now for over a week.

My pads(no rotors) were replaced to 34-11-6-799-166 @ Calgary BMW back in December and I haven't had any squeaking at all ever since

Hi all, this may be an answer from 'good ol blighty'.

I took it in to the dealership as I noticed the car rolls an inch before the handbrake bites when I park on a small or large incline. I also noted that when there is a bit of moisture in the air and parked on an incline, it causes the pads to lock onto the discs. This happens before and after the working day. To move off I have to 'rock' the car in the opposite direction to the direction of intended travel in order to release the pads. If not locking, then a screeching can be heard for approx 500 feet. After that there is no noise. This also happened on my 320d. This time I wanted answers.

The explanation given by the service manager was that BMW use 'floating' brake discs. The purpose is to self tension. It is also quite normal.

'If' I understand correctly, this design needs to stay pretty close to the discs in order to brake as there is no spring mechanism to release. It may also reduce 'warping' from heat expansion under braking due to the floating mechanism. Please feel free for someone far more technical in brake design to expand or shoot me down on this.

It was also stated that to apply the handbrake correctly pull the lever ‘all’ the way up. Many other manufactures have a short travel especially Ford (UK). When people cross over to BMW they experience the car rolling away from them on inclines because they have applied 5 clicks rather than 'topping' off the handbrake travel.

It would appear the squeaky brakes is another BMW characteristic just like the infamous clutch judder, which it is advised to hold for 2-5 secs on the clutch (like burning it out)....

Interesting but we never use the handbrake.

Well, we knew it was too good to be true. The squeaking brakes returned yesterday after over a week and a half of beautiful braking silence - just a little squeaking at first, but now they're getting worse and worse again as we drove it last night. Back to the dealership. How annoying...

So weird - I took the X1 out today and did about 20 slow, easy stops - not a squeak, squeal or any other noise. What's going on?
