Guess who just ordered a FMIC?

I did

I have to apologize to all those waiting on the BMW Performance exhaust fitment; I had these funds earmarked for that but with this 95 degree heatwave the car just was heatsoaking like crazy.

I went with this Wagner since it's a direct bolt-on with no cutting required, and I believe it's the only intercooler currently produced that uses the stock BMW plumbing. All the other ones replace it with aftermarket lower side chargepipes. While that would increase the flow, it makes going back to stock impossible because you have to cut a one time clamp. With this Wagner, maybe I sacrifice a bit of turbulence, but I'm willing to do that to make going back to stock a 10 minute affair.

I verified that the X1 intercooler is 100% identical (same part number and everything) to the 135i. I also inspected the area visually and I'm 95% certain it will work.

Can't wait to get it in and try it out.

Now that's exciting, if it works. I was looking into getting an intercooler myself, but haven't found one that the seller can guarantee will fit.

Another interesting thing...not sure if all 35i's come with it or just m sport, but we have the same oil cooler as the 335 sport package and the M3

Honestly, we have a really good base to build a performance SAV on.

The bottom front air vent of the M-Sport looks very much like the one on the 135i, for which there are several third party intercoolers. And with the oil cooler being the same too, I hope to see more engine enhancements - the differences don't seem to be large enough to require extensive re-tooling.

Current wish/mod list:
Front mounted intercooler
Larger downpipe
Dinan Stage 2 or JB4
Stronger front struts
Bolstering bumper/skirts (foam injection?)

Can you tell where I'm going with this?

I do think you are correct about the intercooler area being similar to the 135. I spent a few minutes down there and there seems to be plenty of clearance.

I just went out and visually confirmed we have the oil cooler. It's exactly like the 335; there is a grate in the passenger side wheel well with the cooler behind it.

Can someone who has a non m-sport 35i see if they have the oil cooler as well?

I have a no line 35i and i have the oil cooler. On the 35i there are no different engine components. the only performance hardware that is different is suspension and sport seats.

Thanks for the info eric. Wasn't sure how it worked with the X1 since when the 335's came out there were some differences in the oil coolers depending on which package you got. Good news for all 35i owners for sure!

Just finished the install, it fits 100% perfectly. It's even easier than the 1 series install because you don't have to pull the bumper out of the way.

Fits directly onto factory piping.

This is all you have to do to install:

1. Remove undertray (maybe 14 screws)
2. Loosen the c clamps with a screwdriver by sticking it under and gently pulling up
3. Pull the factory hose slightly out of the intercooler hose to break the seal
4. Unscrew 2 hex screws holding the intercooler in
5. Intercooler will drop right out with barely any force.
6. There is a rectangular piece of black plastic on the passenger side near the screw hole - simply pull it out. Save it if you ever want to go back to stock.
7. LUBE THE INTERCOOLER HOSES. This is super important. I spent an hour trying to get the hoses to go in all the way without lube; when I took it out and sprayed them with some quick detailer, they went in on the first try in under five seconds.
8. Put the new intercooler in and screw the torx screws in partially to hold it while you connect hoses.
9. Connect the factory hoses to the new intercooler
10. Replace C clamps
11. Re-attach plastic underbody shield.

With the JB4, you can definitely feel the butt dyno difference as it will autotune for the lower IAT's and make more power.

The Wagner intercooler is so much higher quality than the wimpy stock one that it isn't even funny. I'm really disappointed BMW would even ship the stock intercooler with a $50,000 car - it weighs maybe four pounds.

I'll attach a few pics in a minute.

Temps dropped between 30 and 35 degrees. The stock intercooler was seeing IAT's around 155 (ambient temp 80f) with 16PSI of boost. The wagner peaked at 120f on the first run, and even by the fourth WOT run with no cooldown time was only around 126. So it's a big difference. There is an average of 8F rise during 2 gear WOT runs,
