Talk to your dealer. They got some news this week. The old fix of just replacing pads isn't the fix as the pads are the problem.....

Have an appointment booked at Parkview next week. The brakes have become incredibly annoying - when my wife backed out of the driveway yesterday, my daughter thought it was the 'squeaky-brake' garbage truck... Wonder what Parkview will do to address this problem? I'm also having the two recalls done at the same time.

Sent you a PM.

I am thinking that they cut in an engineering change for the brakes on the 2.8i that Canada gets as nobody else in the world seems to have this problem.

is everyone parking outside or inside?

I'm thinking it's probably the thin layer of rust that forms when the car is sitting in a moist environment for a few days. Some days I hear it, others I don't. Parked outside right now while I tidy up th egarage. Should have it back in soon.

This certainly is a common issue with carbon-metallic (more a performance pad than typical street) pad. Anyhow sounds like somethings on the horizon, so I guess I'll just wait and get all three issues addressed in one day.

We park inside all the time - looking forward to getting this problem fixed this week.

Were the part numbers the same each time? Why didn't they put on the new ones? What did they say? What dealer?

bmw toronto. i think its the same pads (need to check the papers), the service manager said something like there isn't a bulletin board for a recall yet, and all the pads are the same right now. so whats gonna happen is when they do get a bulletin board, theyll call us in and install the new ones.

he told me that the squeaking will probably start again in 6000km (with the newly installed ones), but guess what.. it started at 30km.

The part number will be the same all the time : Rear : 34 21 6 790 761 Front :34 11 6 797 858 + sensor 34 35 6 792 561 .
They have to get the pads from different supplier ,like Bosch or Lemfoerder ,etc.

Keep in mind, BMW does NOT manufacture the brake pads, even they've got a BMW label on it.

Yes, I strongly believe that this has to do with the type of brake pads that BMW chose. Brake pads have different ranges of operating temperatures. Normal pads meant for daily use will lose braking power if it is overheated (if you bring it on track). Racing or street pads can operate at higher temperatures, but does not perform well until it is warmed up and will really squeak when the pad is cold.

And with the winter temps, it just makes things worse.

hmmm .. interesting ... ETK catalog's part numbers are based on VIN number or model/year/Market -US,Europ,etc and it shouldn't change .

Strange

Got my two recalls today and mentioned the brakes....asked them to only do them if there was a new solution.

They installed new pads, part number is different then what Dinamo quoted above the new are: 34-11-6-799-166 and there's a PUMA number for this now..4955397. I have not checked real oem yet to see if there is a match for the new part number. It is likely a 3 series part.

We will see if they make a difference.

It is also the part number for a 328i brake pad.

My guess is they tried a harder low dust pad for north America on the x1. They are now switching those that complain to the standard rest of world pad.

Ran them a bit today and the normal BMW brake dust is back! Just like the good old days! The first set had no brake dust at all. So far no squeaking either .

LOL. I got the new ones today too. You're probably right about the brake dust as the wheels are a lot cleaner on the X1 vs. my 335.

I'll take the dust over the squealing. The dust just forces me to wash the car......

Just have ours in today at Parkview for the recall and the brakes, as well as the interior trunk light, and the auto wipers that have a mind of their own, and the seat belt tensioner. How much did we pay for this vehicle?? By the way, I asked the Service Adviser about the holes in the engine compartment that are exposed to the left front wheel well (the ones that most of us have covered over with duct tape in true handyman (and handywoman) fashion!) - he noted that the holes were there to provide additional cooling to the turbocharger since it apparently runs very hot in this vehicle close to the underside of the hood, and advised me to take the duct tape off to let it run cooler. He said it was more of an issue in the summer than the winter for obvious reasons... Any thoughts on this? Has anyone heard anything else (other than in the separate thread) on this issue?

By the way, DC - must have just missed you at Parkview - I saw a Deep Sea Blue X1 being driven my one of the service techs, and wondered if it might be yours...

Yep, that was ours. Had the clamp and pads done and gone by 11am.
