Help with tire sizes
Hey guys. I'm looking into buying a set of wheels from a local who has a 2007 328xi.
The sizes of the wheels are: Front 20x8.5 (35mm offset) rear 20x10 (20mm offset) First question is will these even work for my AWD X1? Second. If they will work, what size tires would I need (front and rear) to keep the circumference and revs per mile identical? |

20's might be a stretch for diameter. To keep a diameter that won't rub, you'll need to go with like 235/30 front, 265/25 rear.

You can use 1010tires.com site where there are a tire size calculator and wheel offset calculator.
Your rear wheel is unlikely to fit. The offset makes them 21mm more on the outise and the wheel is 1" wider than stock (18x9ET41) so that adds 13mm for a total of 34mm more on the outside). If you car is lowered, you might have issues, if not, you can give it a try and see if you like the look (and if it's authorized).

The rear will be fine, the fronts though, they may rub with a tire with a decent sidewall on it. I'm running 40 series tires and at full lock my 19" just touch the inner fender. I'm only lowered 30mm. To run a 20" wheel, and any suspension lowering, there's gonna have to be a lot of work done to the inner fenders. Even at stock height, the X1 has odd shaped wheel wells which may cause rubbing under full lock with a 20" and 40 series tires.
The rear wheels will probably stick out past the fender by about 1/4". Edit: 1010tires isn't all that great, I use willtheyfit.com. They tell you everything you'll need, ride height gain, gap loss etc.

255/30 on a 20" wheel will respect the stock rim+tire diameter. 265/30 would be ok too. That's for the rear. But again, I would worry about the wheel being too much on the outside.
Fronts are ok as long as you respect the original diameter.

Here's a pic of the 328xi that they're on now... I kind of like the wheels.
Let me know what you guys think. They won't come with tires, but he's currently running: 245/35/20 front and 275/30/20 rear Does it seem like the fronts still too far out of the wheel well? Judging by these photos, I will not be able to lower the x1 at all. Does that seem right? |

IMO, that 3 series would have looked much better with staggered 18/19, or 19/20. The rears will poke on your X1. I have 9.5x19-ET22, and they stick out more than I'd like. (275-35/19) With 265-30/20, and ET20, it'll stick out only .4", and be 1.2" closer to the suspension, both of which should work.

Thank you for the info. Not looking to have the wheels poke at all. Would like all four corners neatly tucked within the wells.

How do you guys feel about this setup? Particularly with the xdrive transmission.
19x8.5 et 35 fronts with 235/35r19 tires, 19x9.5 et35 rears with 265/30r19 tires. |

I'd go up 1 size in sidewall front and rear. 40 and 35. Give you a little bit more sidewall for more comfort.

The reason I ask is because no matter how much I play around, I just cannot seem to get the circumference to be identical with a staggered setup. The company I am looking to purchase wheels/tires from says that BMW states that anything less than 2% difference in circumference from front to back on all wheel drive vehicles is acceptable. Want to be as careful as possible while I still have the opportunity as not to prematurely wear out the differential. Last edited by spoolinX1; 06-04-2015 at 11:14 AM.. |

Some brands vary a little. I went with 245-40/19 FR, and 275-35/19 rear, and they were within .1" with the rears being smaller in diameter. Seems fine.
Most of these cars will be lease returns, so you probably don't need to worry about the diff. Stupid me, paid cash, and will either have a future money pit, or trade-in. |

3% isn't bad at all. I've heard no noise from my xDrive or my diffs. Those sizes are within 1% though, so you'll be fine.
