Funky engine misfire and limp mode, then self fixed?

Curious if anybody else has had a similar type experience.
Subject is a 2014 X1 35i that I purchased used with about 4200 miles (4.2k not 42k)
Put about 2000 uneventfull miles on it and install a JB4 piggyback tuner on it.
Ran an additional 2000 or so miles without issues then, out of the blue driving home one day on cruise control at about 60mph, I get a a tiny stumble like it is starving for fuel. It recovers, I continue on. A minute or so later it happens again a little worse. Recovers again and procede.
Then, happens again, worse still. Engine light comes on and I pull over. Engine is stuttering and stumbling. Turn engine off and restart. Runs fine. Pull back into traffic and right away it stumbles again but now I have the check engine light, the "gear" indication, the "service lift" indication and it seems to be stuck in 3rd gear.

Long story short, make it home bucking and jerking. Disconnect battery, and the next day, everything is fine again. Now driven an additional 3500 miles without issue.
My initial thought was the JB4. Checked the wiring and all seemed fine. The CANBUS wires are soldered on so I am pretty sure that is not a factor.

Still sort of don't trust it even though it has been fine for several months...

The JB4 resets fault codes that would be raised by its operation so that might have been what happened. Depending on what tune you're running you might have mismatched the fuel or strained one of the components. Or ECU might have figured out something was wrong and tried to protect the system, might have even been a fault with the JB4 that hasn't reoccurred.

If it's been running fine for a while I'm not sure there is anything you can do figure it out short of disassembling the car and checking every component and even then it might have been a software glitch.

Just my .02

Thanks for that thought,

Sort of curious, I had been running it on Tune 1 at the time and after the "event" and it fixing itself, if anything seemed to run better than ever.
Hammered on it for several weeks to see if I could make it act up again but it ran excellent.

Have since added a charge pipe and am currently running Tune 5, so far all seems happy.
Just hate not really trusting it 100% tho'.

The gear indicator is a transmission/TCU issue. Not sure what it is...and certainly make sure all your connections and the ground are good and tight... but I seriously doubt it's a JB4 issue.

Can't see how that would throw the gear indicator like that. Something else is up.

Thats sort of what I was wondering, if in anyway a wiring issue or even a momentary brain fart on the JB4 could cause the transmission to malfunction seeing as it is tied into the CANBUS. Like I had mentioned, the car seemed to go into a sort of limp mode where it was stuck in about 3rd gear.

I don't think that's true either. The JB4 is hard coded...there are no "brain farts".

More to the point though, the CANBUS, as far as I understand, is ONLY used for user-interface purposes via the dash, and thus, to allow a user to set JB4 parameters. The JB4 functionality does not rely on it at all. Hence, you can set the JB4 to your liking, and skip the CANBUS connection all together.

If your connections are good, including the ground, and the JB4 works normally 99% of the time, honestly, start to look elsewhere for an issue.

This should be stickied though...

Your car is literally ALL E90 xdrive. You're going to have MUCH more input on E90 forums, or N54tech, or any other N55 forum vs. this one. Not only are there naturally less enthusiasts on an X1 forum, but the N55 population is even smaller.

Had a similar problem with "xDrive malfunction" with limp mode. Turned car off and it was fine. Raised it's ugly head a few months later... but again fine after a restart. Brought it to the dealer who didn't know what to make about error codes. They wanted to blame my JB4 but I don't think it has anything to do with that. Ended up taking my X1 back and just clearing the codes. Will just follow and read error codes as they come up.
