So, at 160k miles, having my first real problem. The car runs great, can drive it for hours with no problems. But if the engine has been on for awhile, if you shut it off (like when gassing up), then re-start, it goes into engine malfunction reduced power mode. Throwing code P1290. I cant believe its anything serious because it will run great all day if not shut off, and also if you wait awhile to restart, its fine. But if you shut it down, and need to restart and go, stuck in limp mode. Bad engine or coolant sensor? Wastegate? I dont think I would do a very expensive dealer repair at this point...And it wont pass inspection like this..Thoughts?

that code is cylinder head temp, so it makes sense that residual heat will cause a temp rise to trigger this code and limp mode.

Could be bad spark plugs, cooling issue ( water pumps are notoriously poor on BMW's) perhaps a search on your error code and solutions whould help you get started,

Yup I changed the cylinder head temperature sensor yesterday was easy. $18. part at Advanced Auto. So far so good but wont know until I shut it off hot and restart. Someone else said electronic waste gate could be bad. Engine malfunction reduced engine power sucks need to be near home to test that out.

Kevman, you're still the man!

We'd sure like to hear your water temps while you're tracing this.

I'm used a scangauge II since new 7 years ago.

I would feel like driving blind without it since it gives voltage, temps, and corrected speed.

Temps of that engine is 193 deg f sitting around idling anytime of year with or without AC or heater. Driving with AC on hot day 215. Driving hard on track 209. Driving easy without AC up to 236. Car knows when it can run hotter for more efficiency....brilliant.

What's really funny about my s28i is that I put 4% lower diameter tires 225/40r18 instead of 225/45r18 and the scanguage is perfectly accurate on speed when I should have to correct it.

The scangauge is compact right in front of dash. It's easier to read than the stock gauges which has inaccurate speed anyway.

Make sure coolant full?

Maybe drain oil and refill so you know how much is in there.

I don't trust my oil level gauge, since it never has been low.

However, it also has only 31k miles and when I drain I always get 5 quarts used oil.

I added coolant few weeks ago...was slightly low. Due for an oil change soon. The electronic gage has never shown anything but 100% full the entire time. Changed the engine temperature sensor. No luck so far. Car runs great just this one glitch when you restart and engine has been running awhile, gets engine malfunction reduced power. Wait 10-15 mins after shutting off, re starts fine.

I just bought a Foxwell NT510 elite scan code reader and checked for codes.

Car never threw a code, shut engine power, or ran with reduced power, and only 31k miles on X1 s28i.

However, I did have some track days where the DSC would cut power momentarily. I left the DSC on kept the ediff working.

I got a 2D57 Vanos code which involves the Vanos problem of stalling car, and I also got code of 36FD DME having to do with faulty programming of DME.

Look up Vanos troubles, since many BMW's have this trouble.

I got my foxwell from it's website for $129, and it seems easy enough to use, and will register AGW battery change when it comes.

Oh, and I checked the oil level which said 72mm and anything >60 is good.
