DSC and xDrive Malfunction Error

My wife received the attached error message today immediately after starting before going to lunch. Car is driving fine. She will give me an update after doing a restart. Anyone else experience this error?

(I wonder if it has to do with how dusty her car is?!?)

No error messages after lunch and the car being turned off for about an hour. For now, I'll chalk it up to some odd sensor/configuration unless someone else has any thoughts.

Happened twice on mine. There is a switch or something inside the steering column that needed a fastener to be put on correctly (that wasn't when built.) They fixed it under warranty.
First time they replaced a speed sensor (which wasn't it).
So it will come loose and cause that fault to come up until it is fixed.
They said that stability & traction control will be inop when that check light is on, but otherwise it won't "hurt" the car to drive it.

Seems fixed now.

Hope that helps. (Took it to Ralph Schomp BMW in Lonetree, CO.)

Thanks. I'll keep an eye on it. If it happens again I will take it in...otherwise wait for our next service.

I had these same issues. It actually started happening more frequently over the course of a few weeks. I searched the different bmw forums for information and the one that I tried to exclude was weak battery/electrical. Sure enough, my alternator was putting out 12.8V or so with the car running. Even after a long drive, I would hook my battery charger up and with the car off, it would read 12.3V and 30% or less charge. However, I never had issues starting the car up. Finally after following the situation for 2 weeks, I went to the dealer. After doing diagnostics, the dealer said nothing was wrong. I couldn't believe it and asked to tech to sit in the car while I unlocked dash and showed the battery voltage. I couldn't believe it but the alternator was putting out 13.3-14.3V. WTF! THe tech said he didn't do anything. Since that time, alternator voltage has been normal and no further "DSC, 4x4 malfunctions"/limp modes have popped up.

So if this happens to you, check your electrical system.

When I put a scangaugeII on my X1 s28i, I discovered battery was charging at about 14.7 all the time until after a 600 mile road trip.

Then, battery would be charged up, and go back to normal mode of NO Charging until you let off gas.

So, you were lucky and drive car enough to make it work right, and I don't drive enough.

Your car stays around the normal battery charge of 12.8 and mine the charging state of 14.7.

Your situation seems better than mine.

Plug in a Scangauge and you can watch it start charging as a braking effect when you use brakes.

You don't wanna know what a new one costs, so never run it down.

You can also monitor the voltage and other things through the cluster hidden menu.

That's what I did. I just don't get why 2 weeks straight the alternator voltages were low. They just diagnose it and after that it's been normal.

I got the error from the original post this morning on my way to work. I went out a little later to go to my PT appointment and it was gone.

I may ping my SA to let her know I saw this, but for now I'll probably wait and see if it returns.

I took my car in a little while back due to an iDrive failure and even though I stopped getting DSC/xDrive malfunction error they looked into it as well.

I had left my OBDII bluetooth adapter connected when I dropped of the car and after finding no issues related to the error they commented that these devices are known to cause misc error messages.

I kind of blew this off, but since I wasn't currently using the adapter I removed it. Fast forward to this weekend and I decide since the weather is nice I am going out for a drive. I also decide to bring along my cheap android tablet with DashCommand and plug back in the adapter.

After not seeing the error message in a good 2 months, within 30 minutes of starting my drive lo and behold the DSC/xDrive malfunction message pops up again.

I again removed the adapter and drove a couple of more hours on Saturday, plus several drives on Sunday (and my work drive this morning) with no more error messages. So it looks like they weren't just blowing smoke up my @$$ about these potentially driving issues.

Yeah I had the same issue with mine when I left it in for a while. These days I take it out as soon as I'm done with it

i am convinced these dongles throw off the voltage regulation when it is plugged in with the engine running. i use the voltage display on my radar detector and notice voltage fluctuated wildly and ultimately triggers the dsc/4x4 error--probably because of low battery charge. i only use my wifi adapter with battery power or external voltage regulated power supply....no problems. You won't know it's happening unless you monitor battery voltage either through a device or the BMW dashboard (which is a pain to unlock).

interesting, this happened on my x5 and I was thinking of an x1 bc of my issues. Looks like all xdrives are plagued with the same issue

mine made a loud downshifting noise followed by limp mode. car wouldn't come out of park and once towed to dealer there was nothing wrong!
