X1 Values

I am the owner of a 18d sdrive m-sport in space grey, it is a year old and has 9000 miles on the clock and cost me £29000. I have had quite afew problems with it but decided to upgrade to a 23d ( As I have a soft spot for it) as i find the 18d a little under powered. I have just spoken to my local BMW dealership who tells me my 18d is only worth £15000 and has lost £14000 in a year. I always thought BMW's held there value better than most vehicles so I have spoken to 4 other BMW dealers who tell me the same thing. So any one who is thinking of selling there X1 BEWARNED it will only be worth peanuts!

I think thats the same for all new cars, they lose value the minute you drive out the show room, check the value of a 3-4 year old BMW compared to a 3-4 year old Ford, that where the value period or depreciation is more visable between brands.

Maybe try and sell private, this used X1 online is worth far more than your offer..

What the dealer is offering has nothing to do with the fact it's an X1. I bought a new 2010 Mini Clubman S for $31K in late 2009 and went to try and trade on a new Countryman S when they were coming out and they offered me $17K (a little over a year later). Dealers will screw you and trading a new car is the like investing in Facebook right now.

This is exactly why I decided to spend money making my X1 the car I had always wanted. I was just not prepared to accept this level of depreciation.

It appears to me that the motor industry is still living in the era of 'the company car' where business's can recover the 20% VAT and depreciate the vehical for tax purposes. The car manufacturers certainly seems to have 'forgotten' the finacial impact on the private purchaser who has neither of these options available to reduce the cost of ownership. Loyalty to private purchasers? Hmmm . They also seem to forget that 'a private purchaser' probably also 'works' for an organisation and perhaps may have some influence on policy.......then of couse there are blogs and social networking sites that can have a major impact on a brand. The world has changed in the last few years and the car manufacturers marketing has not caught up yet!

The financial 'optics' are all wrong, once you start seeing almost 50% depreciation when a car is low mileage, great condition, and two years old and the car cost £40,000 when new. it now makes more sense to keep the vehical and buy a second low mileage model or alternatively invest the £20000 (and hopefully grow it) and keep the car for five to six years. Will I be buying new again? Probably not unless it's something very special that I have no intention of selling at some point.

I have problems with front and rear parking sensors, they can pick up a leaf moving in the wind but not a brick wall, my local dealer has 6 attempts at fixing them but because there are NO fault codes logged they say they can't do anything about them.
I also am have problems when I start my car. I insert the key push the start button and a warning keeps coming up telling me I have inserted the wrong key. I have been told by my local dealer all BMW's do this.
Fuel economy is terrible I have now done 9000 miles 50% local journeys and 50% motorways and I have averaged 41mpg!
I am on my 2nd clutch in a year and is looking like I may need a 3rd and lately it has been pulling to the left, the left front and rear wheels have been aligned 9 times but still pull to the left but nobody knows why or how to fix.

I feel for you. Sounds like you got a lemon.

Having said that though, 41 UK mpg is equivalent to 6.889 litre per 100km which is actually right in the ballpark I think.

I have had my X1 for 20 months and got a tentative quote of 38k on my car on trade in. I paid 68k when new. Unfortunately depreciation hits hardest in the first year. Other brands are even worse.

14k, that's rubbish. Just keep it. Although I understand your predicament with your car, a new car should ideallly be kept for a good number of years to get your monies worth out of it. Dealers have to make a profit and allow for any things that need to be fixed to bring it right up to AUC spec.
Also when buying a new car everyone should pick the exact spec/model to suit them for the longer term. New cars are costly, keeping for a long time just makes more sense, as is buying the right spec to start with. If the right spec is out of budget people are better off buying second hand IMO.

Also, an analysis of a typical person who changes a new car say every year means they usually have plenty of £ and willing to put up with the loss although this is cannot be a generalisation of everyone who wants to change after just a year. But I expect dealers offer worse trade-in on nearly new cars probably taking this into consideration.

Keep in mind that the dealer will not give you the real market price. Dealer market price and private market price are different things. The dealer must buy it for less to sell it for profit, plus taxes.

Sell your car PRIVATELY and you will see that the situation is different. NEVER sell your car to the dealer.

Agree with DarrenBM... a new car you should be kept longer than one or two years. But i understand where the OP's coming from.. when a car is a lemon there is a point where you can have enough. This also makes it difficult to sell privately (if you have any sense of moral)... difficult situation... all the best.
