I think if one only cares to have a nimble BMW with seating for 4 and decent luggage space, go light on the options and you still get a nice vehicle. Far less expensive than X3 or 3 series wagon.

I wish that options were available without 'packages', like xenon lights and backup sensors. It would also be nice to have cloth as the base seating material instead of sweaty vinyl as an alternative to damage-prone leather. I know that most Americans have a misguided preference for leather, but who really wants vinyl? It's too hot here in the sunny south and it cracks up in the frozen wasteland. Most vehicles in this class have cloth available, so what's the big deal?

That's ridiculous that somebody must pay an extra $4,150 just to get xenons.

By the time I add up all my options, I might as well just order an X3. Xenons are a $900 stand alone option for the X3 28i.

Unfortunately, F30 is set up the same way - want xenon, pay the ZPP.

Who knows, things might change with X3 like this also.

well, ZPP is a given right? if u want xenons, nav and a back up camera (which many ppl will want) that's $8650 right there. M-sport (on this forum) would be a preferred option, so figure $11,650 tacked on to a base of either $31K or $33K depending on sdrive/xdrive.

I know similarly equipped x3's push 50 (with msport, cnv, tch, pp) so i guess it's still 8k cheaper, but hardly cheap.

What's "Performance Control" listed in the M-Sport package?

On no cold weather with m-sport, looks like you can at least get the heated front seats, but not the heated steering wheel or headlight washers

Never mind. See below from BMW CA website on Performance Control. Looks like it's only available with all wheel drive. I'm leaning towards rear wheel drive, so likely won't be getting this.

Joy awaits around the next corner.
Performance Control in the BMW X1.
This optional technology for xDrive models uses dynamic engine and braking intervention to improve cornering behaviour, thus boosting driving pleasure and enhancing safety at the same time. Through targeted braking, optimal torque is distributed to the individual wheels depending on the driving situation. Performance Control also optimises engine performance management by gently breaking the rear wheel on the inside of the bend while at the same time increasing torque to the wheel on the outside of the bend. This allows for particularly dynamic conerning with the best possible grip. The new BMW X1 also responds to steering commands more spontaneously, for increased agility and sporty driving.

$34,545 for a X1 M-Sport is a nice price..

This is based off the 3-series wagon chassi; so if you like the looks of it, it's a great option for those of us who wants a wagon for $4-$6k less.

I really think it will do well here in the states.

I wonder how much less it would be for a manual $1-$2k?

See our interview on the X1 with the X1 production manager @ http://e84.xbimmers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=672430

Short answer is it's not currently planned, unless there's enough demand for it.

I know the EU models have cloth; I think the issue is that BMW in the US is still identified as a luxury brand, not an every-day-use brand.

Indeed.

I'll bet this is due to them not wanting to spend the money on development of an MSport bumper with headlight washers for the US market. I really doubt it is due to the heated steering wheel. And speaking of that, the real bummer is that you cannot get the heated steering wheel ad-hoc. But at least you can still get the heated seats. Not having headlight washers is not too big a deal.

Well one could just opt for a nicely equipped 2011/12 CPO X3

X1 launches in September for US I think. At least that is wast I read on military sales site in Germany. As they are promoting the upcoming US launch.

Dang. $40,295 for the sDrive 28i with Ultimate + light package.

I can build a very similar F30 328i for exactly $4K more. And it's hard to deny the new features of the F30 chassis, or even F25.

Yes, the X1 is currently having its NA debut at the 2012 NYIAS this week - http://e84.xbimmers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=670781

You can thank the new Product Planning Manager for that. The former moved on and he was more about the product than making the most money- He was an enthusiast and understood how many package cars from what I have seen, Oliver is not like that. There are few left in the company that are. Matt Russell being head of M is a godsend.... we should thank our lucky stars as without him I am sure M cars would have no options and come loaded to gills with crap.

Disappointing that both the X1 and the F30 require premium package if you want xenons. Why not just be able to get msport, xenons, and premium sound? I could care less about the other things that just add unnecessary weight.

Also, why doesn't BMW at least use projection-style halogen lights? That way we could at least upgrade to HIDs without having to replace the whole headlight assemblies.

I don't know who does BMW's market research for the U.S. but it is a fail. There are plenty of us here that don't want all options lumped into a fast food restaurant menu style...can i get a number 1 with extra cheese please???

just venting

And if you look in the upper left of the lists, you can see the quoted 0-60 time. I saw the 35 posted elsewhere and it's only 1s faster. So basically you are paying 6k more for two fewer gears, two more cylinders, lower fuel economy, and 1s faster. What with the apparent tunability of the N20, I am wondering why anyone will buy the 35, unless it is truly special in some unknown factor. As of now, I'm looking at a 28 xdrive with Msport, Premium, heated seats and lights.

I think it all depends why one buys X1, or BMW for. If the main purpose to indulge in luxury and latest technologies, then it makes more sense to move up to bigger vehicles like X3 and X5. If the main purpose is for driving dynamics and utility, then X1 is a very good value proposal (except for the lack of 6MT for the North America market). My other complaint would be the weight, 3,700 lb.

In a perfect world, every option would be a la carte. But BMW wants to make more profit.

M sport steering wheel in the past does not have heating, and since X1 was released several years earlier, it has stayed that way.
