Suspension Q's
I want to lower my X1 (base model) but I don't want to lower it's ability to handle extra weight. Also it'd be nice if it didn't make the ride any harsher than stock. What spring/strut-shock combo would lower the car about 2", and retain a decent ride? I often carry extra weight in the cargo area, so that's an issue, too. I'm not going racing, I just want a better looking car without losing any utility. BTW, got a JB4 for Christmas!!!

Same as everyone else, H&Rs and Bilsteins.

Best setup out there for the X1.....looks better, rides better, handles better. Be sure to also shorten the bumpstops as part of this upgrade.

H&R won't drop you 2". Maybe an 1 1/4". If you want 2" you'll need a coil over like KW

True. I wish we had a bigger owners group...then we could play around with different E90 springs to see what gets us what.

It's all E90 X drive suspension wise, with the only significant difference being the diameter of the front strut needed to fit a larger opening in the knuckle. Springs are the same general shape, from what I saw comparing vs. my E series 135.
Just to knit pick, springs don't go "on" the shocks(rear dampeners). They do sit over/go on the front struts (front dampeners) though. But anyway, unless you have a pair of E90 sedan springs handy and like to experiment with fitment/ride height/etc. I'd stick with either a known quantity X1 specific aftermarket spring, or a height-adjustable coil over. Problem with the coilovers is that they seem to just use an E90 coilover with a sleeve over the front strut for the larger knuckle opening. This generally means the you're limited how high you can make the rear (like it potentially sits too low for some people's tastes even on its highest setting).

I'm getting my H&R springs / B6 shocks as everyone else seems to have also, but just considering other options for a similar price range. |

I am actually went little differently and got B12 kit which is the same B6 struts but European spec Eibach Pro-Kit Springs instead of H&R. The drop is minimal and Eibach is known to be softer than H&R. Still I am very happy with the setup.

There is no issue with the rear dampeners, the only potential "issue" would be not having enough travel in the adjustable spring perch in the rear to achieve your desired ride height. (There is no "coilover" in the rear, it's just a stand alone shock, and a spring that sits on a height-adjustable perch.) You can search in some of the coilover threads, there was a guy with a LeMans blue X1 on KWV3s and his ride height was the highest possible in the rear and still pretty low.
