Drink Your Whiskey from an Old Fashioned or Double Old Fashioned?

I was gifted a set of crystal old fashioned glass (aka, rocks or lowball glasses) that have a capacity of 7 oz (traditionally between 6-8 oz). I don't think I've ever seen a home bar with these. People seem to usually have double old fashioned glasses (traditionally between 12-16 oz).

I think I like the smaller size. I have read some posts online advocating for each. The posts for the smaller size tend to advocate based on improving the quality of your drink, while the posts for the larger size tend to advocate based no the size of your drink and the convenience of the glass size.

Which do you prefer?

For drinking neat or on the rocks I like the smaller glasses for sure..keeps the drink at spec and maintains quality. In a larger glass, when over the rocks, liquor becomes diluted due to more rocks and alcohol.

Small glass for neat - if it's something I don't really want to sip.

Large glass on the rock - one single ice sphere if possible, 2 standard cubes otherwise. Imo, good scotch needs a touch of water to bring out all the different flavors.

But when you have the large glass and on the rocks do you go 1/2-3/4 full? Because that glass with only a cube or two and the rest liquor becomes a knocker. Don't get me wrong...with my small glass I'll drink plenty but it doesn't seem like a BIG drink. If you have a large glass and go less than half it's a nice drink...but over that it gets like a warm watery effect, eh?

With a large glass and a large sphere cube I do a long pour or 2 jiggers worth.

Neat I go 1 1/2 jigger.

I think how you drink your libation is the key. If you want it on the rocks you need the space in your glass, especially for the large spheres.

Exactly. Spheres seem pretentious, but they are so good for scotch. They chill it down but impart minimal water from melting.

i use old fashioned glasses for anything that is neat or with 1 cube.

Double old fashioned glasses for things i drink on the rocks, however, sometimes ill use my double old fashioned for a neat drink if im having a lazy night and dont want to keep refilling my glass.

A big glass can look silly (unless you give a really generous pour) and you actually waste juuuuust that lil bit of good booze sticking to the bottom.

A regular Joe is drinking 1 small 0.3 liters bottle of home made brandy every day. His wife is always complaining how much her husband is drinking: He is drinking 1 bottle every day! Joe overheard that and changed to 0.5 liters big glass. After that his wife was telling people : He is drinking only one glass now

Regular old fashioned glass. I just add a splash of seltzer to my Scotch, but no ice.

On a drinking hiatus for a bit right now but was getting through a bottle of JW Green. MacAllan 12 before that. Have some Russian Standard Platinum in rotation too.

Bigger glass, more booze.

It's the difference of several drinks a night and one drink. And if you are only having 1 drink, you don't have a drinking problem.

Like the Riedel O stemless wine glasses. The red wine glass is a fishbowl. It will take a half bottle of wine if you so desire. Just one glass of wine, though.

Your skunk indicated to me that your shed building abilities smacked of American, rather than the superior Canadian way of construction. This was before he returned to your shed as he mentioned that he only had to tunnel under two more supports before your shed either collapsed or sunk two feet into the ground (he was uncertain which was the more likely scenario). He looked pretty happy with himself before he left though...I'd watch him carefully, he had this payback gleam in his eye.
