Summer tire choice
Well, I finally dropped the hammer on new wheels; Niche 130 in 8.5x19 ET35 fronts, and 9.5x19 ET20 rears. I was going to get Michelin SS, but since it is a DD, and never raced, would they be the best choice? Also, Since both rear sizes should fit OK, should I go with 275-35, or 265-35 tires.

Pirelli P-zeros are rather nice and grippy for the summer months. Also, look at michelin Sport cup 1/2 tires for a really aggressive tire- probably superfluous for an X1, but fantastic on an e39 and an e60 //M5

PSS only have limited warranty on tread life if the tires are staggered in size. They are really good. I have 10000 kms on mine with about 1mm of tread gone. The grip they have is astounding.

I'm also very, very happy with my Michelin Pilot Super Sport's (non run flat).
Pirelli P Zero (run flat) should be good but harder (due to runflat I gues) and fade more, so more expensive due to less total distance before changing. And when you read comments about this tire the only 2 things they say is: -not the cheapest tire (well... you don't want the cheapest tire for your safety) -not good for circuit (well... it is a normal use tire, not for the race track) |

I priced Conti extreme DW @ around $850, and the PSS at around $1300. I won't be racing, but handling is important, and I won't be using run flat tires. I would have to change around the sizes, as the Contis don't come in the exact sizes I want. I put Nitto Invos on my ZO6, and they're like ice skates, even with 325 wide rears. They were cheap and quiet.

PSS are awesome, though like you mentioned, come at a premium. The next best options would include (but not limited to) :
- Bridgestone Potenza S04 Pole Position - Conti ExtremeContact DW - Hankook Ventus V12 EVO2

Have the Pirelli P-zeros on the car right now, but I've got the Michelin PSS on another car. Although the current tires are good, I have a feeling that the PSS will be even better and I'll be swapping them out once the current ones are done. I know that the PSS made my other ride (g37 coupe) an absolute joy to drive once I replaced the sucky OEM tires.

Good to know..thanks. That's what I'm getting; the prices right now aren't too bad @ Discount Tire. Two rebates, also. My latest major crisis is deciding between staggered tire sizes. I'd like to have 245-35/19 fronts, which would be 25.8" dia., and 265-35/19 rear @ 26.3" dia. Would it work to have a 1/2" higher rear?

Why not run a square setup and take full advantage of the treadlife warranty? Ah, just noticed your wheel sizes. Is there a 245/40 front available that would put you closer to equivalent sizing? |

You gotta stay within 3% front to rear for diameter. I run 235/40 and 265/35 on mine. I have 8.5" front and 10 rear for wheel widths.

Our X1 is at lease end in 15 months and the OEM tyres are down to 6/32nds so i don't want to run them again if i can help it.
it just so happens that our X1 and my 9-3 wagon both ride on 225/50's, so i was thinking of strapping some summers on the X1 this summer and next, at lease time put the OEM run flats back on then throw the summers at the Saab which will need new rubber by then. Any advantage is getting a REAL summer tyre rather than an all season? |

This will sound crazy, because everyone is talking about expensive tires, but I had looked for a budget tire for my 335d and even at one point e83 x3. I picked up a set of Sumitomo HTR Z III and they were absolutely spectacular handling and grip. Hit plenty of potholes (even damaged a wheel) and never a blowout or even a bubble. Just a thought, check out some reviews online.

I paid about $1500 CDN for my Michelin PSS set. 70% of that being the front tires.

After reading lots of reviews on DW and PSS, IMHO that the higher price of PSS can be about the same cost as DW since the PSS seems to last longer.
I thought I'd get DW next time because of good grip and lightest tire out there, but the PSS shows about .03 more G's in dry and wet, so It's PSS for me. |

Nice looking wheel. What color did you get? Can't wait to see install pics.

I ordered the black (gloss) with machined face, but they sent a different color; matte black, with machined and dark tinted face. Bought them from Autoanything, and they were willing to trade back, but wanted pictures to prove I got the wrong wheels. I don't think the color combo they have pictured is available anymore, due to checking the manufacturer's site, so I decided to keep these. With a MW body, and that flat black trim all around, I think they'll look pretty nice. I will post some pics when I stop obsessing about tire diameters, and select some damn tires.
