I concur Gizze, I use navigon and love it; I am more interested in the hardware features. According to another site, BMW nav is simply "copilot" repackaged which is cheap enough on its own (though a good value for the price), it is not as refined as navigon.

Navigon is awesome.
Purely on its routing alogrythms, the routes it chooses are pretty much what I would choose when you know the area. Where as Garmin and TomTom either goes for short routes or sticks to the main roads, even if that means adding loads more miles, never really think sensibly, and even with the IQ routes etc. it does more of the same but will choose one over the other depending on time of day etc. Easier to explain with images. With Garmin and TomTom if I choose fast it keeps me on the dual carrigeway, even though it adds 12 miles and 10 minutes. If I choose short, it takes me off road far too early, saving around 4 miles over the next option, but all B roads and it takes me an extra 20 minutes... With Navigon it actually looks at when it is worth cutting cross country, this is 4 miles longer than the short route but 12 miles shorter than the fast route but saves me 10 minutes over fast and 20 minutes over short... Don't get me wrong, sometimes it still asks you to take bizarre routes, pull out of my sons nursery and it wants me t drive 2 miles to the motorway north to head south, where as there is a turning 2 miles south as well!! So far from perfect, but generally the best one for me as it takes the roads I would 99% of the time. |

iPhone Station and Related iPhone Questions
I have a US Build 2008 335 xi sedan with bluetooth phone steering wheel integration.
I really like the iPhone station but don't want to lose BT in steering wheel. Do you know: could you install the iPhone4 station with antennae, charging, etc., but NOT the functions that interfere with the steering wheel? I might lose official BMW APP, but I've got wireless navigation on the phone anyway. Also, is there a way to send a wireless or wired rear camera data stream to an iPhone 4, with or without the iPhone Station? Thanks. |

THIS WILL ONLY WORK IF YOU HAVE A USB/AUX INTERFACE - SA 6FL IN THE DASHBOARD: Buy the Iphone 4 cradle separately - 84 21 2 219 208 and the E84 Adapter Tray 84 21 2 219 865 (model specific). (By not buying the whole kit 84 21 2 219 219 you will save on the control unit and harness cost ) Install the Adapter Tray and Cradle. Next connect the wire from the cradle to the AUX/USB port from the inside - 4 wires from the cradle, 2 for audio out -white/yellow + 2 for power GND+5VO black/brown. Now you will be able to charge the Iphone and listen to the audio from your Iphone through your head unit car speakers when you select AUX mode. As you have not touched anything else your blue tooth and steering controls will work as they have always been previously. The phone call will also take precedence over music. Also no coding is required because the car thinks that you have plugged in your Iphone using the Y cable from the outside using the USB/AUX port. So its pretty simple installing the cradle with no visible wires or coding and all existing hands free controls still working perfectly. Unlike a 30 pin Apple Dock the cradle only has 14 wires - 3 Audio L+R+GND, 2 MIC, 2 Bluetooth, 2 Power GND+5VO, 1 Reset, 1 BC-WDG. In addition it has 2 U-CH + 1 GND. Im no expert but to me I dont see video IN like in a 30 pin Iphone Dock. So I am assuming you will not be able to push a video feed in through the cradle. But if anyone knows more, please share it with us. Last edited by ecoveon; 09-05-2011 at 04:10 AM.. |

The Bluetooth pairing and the handsfree mic work perfectly for both talking to and hearing the other person. It works as though you connect using the cable adapter 61 12 0 440 796 to the SA 6FL USB/AUX interface. Yeah, I really dont know what the four other wires are, the two U-CH , one GND and the BC-WDG. I am not able to see the equivalent pinouts in the apple dock, so I suspect that its probably something like a universal channel for data.!! Dont know mate!! Hope to hear from someone on this. I was wondering if those without the bluetooth and usb could hook this up as a neater solution without using the module and coding.
I would be happy to get in and press aux and have my music and calls coming through the speakers, however, once docked I wonder if it turns off the iPhone mic because it expects to be seeing an external mic like on most car kits. |

Your right about the mic. You need an external mic when docked, that is why you need the blue tooth to automatically override for voice when phone calls occur and keep the external mic open. |

Got this message from BMW: BMWLINK.support.bmw.com Date: Mon, Sep 5, 2011 at 2:56 PM
Dear Simon, There is no other connection between the BMW Station and the car but the audio and mute control. Control of the iPhone via the steering wheel control buttons is not possible. Only the volume can be controlled with the steering wheel buttons. Best Regards The BMW Link Team Last edited by ecoveon; 09-05-2011 at 05:55 AM.. |

Thank you and clarification on iPhone Station
Thanks for all your input.
Clarification, please: when you say the iPhone cannot be controlled from the steering wheel, but volume control works, I'm not sure what you mean. Right now (pre iPhone Station) all I (know that I) can do from the steering wheel is initiate a hands free call, answer an incoming call, and adjust the volume. Are you saying that dial/answer functions will be gone from the wheel, or are you referring to other functionality I don't even know that I have? Also, I'm not finding anyone willing/able to sell me the iPhone station. Even UK dealers say it's not available (Despite the videos and photos on the web). Do you know where to get one? A possible answer to the extra wires question: my understanding is that the iPhone station is supposed to connect the phone to the external antennae and boost signal. Could any of those wires serve that purpose? Thanks again. Last edited by MFoley; 09-09-2011 at 11:57 PM.. |

No. The center console snap in does that; not this product. This is a BMW specific dock with slightly better functionality than that of Kensington, Tom Tom, Magellan, etc |

Since you have Bluetooth already, your iphone will pair with your head unit as it always has been doing. Yes you are right the extra wires are for the signal enhancement channels. I am baffeled why BMW has not made this accessory available, they first debuted it last fall in Paris. After that it took them a good six months to make the BMW Link App available on the German Itunes store. Only in August did the cradle become available in limited quantities. You will still be able to find it in some German BMW dealerships, and I hope it will soon be available in the UK. I got mine from Baum BMW. Looks like I am probably one of the few X1 owners in the world having a functioning BMW Station!!! In Freidmans words - The world is Flat now. Last edited by ecoveon; 09-12-2011 at 01:33 AM.. |

upper storage compartment
i have read with interest the i-phone mounting conversion in your X1,i would like to remove my storage compartment and replace it with the unit shown in the pitures you posted but in my case use it to mount my tomtom sat nav so i can hide the wires away behind the dash,i got the part number as you posted is this the same part for all X1's or are there variations within the E84 model, hope you can help as it's a very neat solution and a lot cheaper than the BMW option

Have a look on realoem.com under the nav/retrofit section for your model, there is a nav portable option and that comes with the tray for your car, you can order the tray on its own.
I am seriously considering going with the new Alpine s-370 monitor and their usb interface instead of the iPhone Station. Just a bit worried how well BMW will keep up to date with holders for the iPhone 5, and whether their software will work with iOS 5. Last edited by gIzzE; 09-14-2011 at 02:28 PM.. |

They are always behind. The ones for iPhone4 were made available at the end of April this year. I don't know when the iPhone4 came, out but you can figure out the leadtime.
