Limited Dinan Options for X135i??

I just recently purchased a CPO X1 and would like to add a Dinan stage 2 flash, but was told by the dealer that the flash requires an exhaust upgrade. After looking around I can't find any info on a Dinan exhaust option. How can they require an exhaust upgrade that Dinan doesn't make?

I've got to be mistaken. Can someone help me out?

Looking at the DINAN website, it appears they might have changed their product line-up for the 35i. Used to be, Stage 1 was the chip/tune, while Stage 2 was upgraded turbo, exhaust, etc.

I suggest you call or email Dinan. I’ve found them to be responsive.

There are a lot of tuner who don't sell hard part slike exhausts and stuff.

Any E series (335, 135, etc.) N55 downpipe will work. VRSF or a used BMS.

I think I got my BMS for like $150.

I bought an X1 35 with a Stage 2 tune installed by the dealer. I called Dinan to verify the registration for warranty. Dinan told me that the stage 2 produces 355 HP/400 TQ without any changes to exhaust or breather needed. They were emphatic about that. I hope this helps.

Didn't Dinan used to charge like 2 k for the tune? Surely you aren't getting a lot for your money.

I didn’t pay for mine since it was on the car when I bought it, but it is listed on their site at about $800. It may not the best tune for the money, but your factory warranty remains intact and it turns the car into quite a sleeper. My original post was in direct response to the original question by the OP, not to start a tune peeing contest.

Not sure who told you that...your factory warranty does not "remain intact" with Dinan mods, as it actually did...say...10 or 15 years ago.

Like with any tune/mod, your factory warranty cannot be voided. A dealer can only deny a claim on a case by case basis, citing yours mods as a (potential) cause, including Dinan mods.

The BMW/Dinan relationship has been over for some time now.

Currently, Dinan claims only to match BMW's warranty coverage. However, you can read many instances of them attempting to deny claims, just as BMW sometimes does. Dare I say getting BMW to cover repairs is easier than getting Dinan to, understandably so.

https://www.dinancars.com/warranty/

But make no mistake, your factory warranty is no safer with a Dinan tune vs. any other tune.

Warranty safe / warranty not safe... I run a Dinan chip and just had my turbo replaced under warranty.

Not sure what that means. I've had turbos and injectors replaced a ta BMW dealer with a JB4 on the car.

Make no mistake, BMW could have chosen not to replace your turbo if they discovered the Dinan chip, it's up to them. Consider yourself fortunate. And if you went to Dinan, they could deny the claim that the turbo failed because of the chip, and denied you as well (not the 10th time that's happened to people).

Of course, it's better to have the Dinan warranty...but it's a very common misconception that BMW honors warranties despite Dinan parts. That agreement has long since expired.

The DINAN chip is right there when you lift the hood - impossible to miss - actually, the dealer installed it. I’m just offering my experience as evidence that the warranty is not voided. That is all.

Got ya.

As I stated in my post, your warranty cannot be voided by any aftermarket mods....nothing specific to Dinan. That's against the law.

I was just clarifying, BMW and Dinan no longer have a relationship. BMW ended it. Despite it ending years and years ago, the idea still exists that BMW approves Dinan parts for use under their warranty...that's false.

That being said, as a general rule, BMW dealers tend to be more lenient on mods. One of the perks vs. cheaper brands, for sure. Countless people have engine work done leaving their JB4s, Dinan tunes, etc. on the car.

You pay the premium for Dinan's warranty, not BMWs. That's all.

Just out of curiosity, where does your Dinan "chip" sit out in the open and visible when you pop the hood?

Or do you just have that little Dinatronics box that splices into a single connector on the intake side?

If that's the case, techs often miss entire JB4 harnesses, let alone a single Dinan splice-in. I don't think you can assume they saw it. But anyway, neither here nor there.

Pretty sure they saw the big black box with the flashing blue light...
