My x1 has reached 34 mpg
I guess it is possible. Didn't think it was. But it is. I mainly do 90% interstate driving with a little stop and go. I was very surprised. Has anyone else reached the 34mpg mark? Just curious.

Xdrive or Sdrive? I think a few Sdrive drivers have done it.
My xdrive trip computer indicated 32 on a highway run with a tail wind, but the overall MPG for that tank turned out to be 29. edit: Reset the trip average while coasting down hill for a quick 50+. |

You have to drive like an angel (a 90 year old angel) in order to acheive that kind of fuel economy. In my case, it helped that about 95% of the trip was on the highway. It is REALLY easy to destroy the average with just a few hard acceleration runs away from stop lights or up onramps. LOL!

I have done as low as 6 L/100km, just drive slowly, around 100km/h and no hard accelerations.
But that is boring ass hell, so I'm mostly doing about 9L/100km |

It's regaining momentum that's the killer. As long as your accelerations don't engage the turbo, it doesn't matter much whether you take 10 seconds to get to speed slowly, or 5 seconds to get to speed quickly and then coast for 5 seconds. But if you brake and then have to go back up to the same speed, that'll cost you. The bigger the difference in speed, the more fuel.
It's easy to get my 35i to do better than 28 mpg if I think "momentum", even if accelerating quicker than the average person does. But it takes always thinking ahead, and driving like that won't always make you friends on the road. |

Any access to non-ethanol gas? I know SC has quite a few no ethanol gas stations and the e0 should give a 3-4 mpg increase. (Based on my past experience with 318ti DD when our state switched from e0 to e10)

What part of Columbia are you at because the station I've always used is 10% ethanol? I'm in the Irmo area and always use the brands BMW recommends "top tier" but I'd switch in a second for better mileage and more power.

So the 3 stations near me all say 87 only for ethanol free. I usually but 93 so 87 is below what BMW recommends (89).

I think the minimum recommended octane level is 91.... Personally. I would never go below 91 octane. Finding a 91 or 93 octane no ethanol is usually limited to gas stations that are near lakes , bays to service the marinas. ( marine engines hate ethanol. )

I live near a really big lake so that's why I have several stations with ethanol free but apparently boat owners like cheap gas (87).

They don't recommend 91 just to get you to part with money. When using 89, the engine will adjust to avoid knocking by delaying the ignition, which causes less complete combustion, and higher gas usage. So while it runs fine on 89, what you save at the pump, you lose most of by getting worse mpg. Lower octane can cause more engine wear and earlier wear-out of the catalytic converter, which is why BMW recommends 91. There's not much point in going much above 91, though. 93 is fine, but won't work better than 91 for normal driving. Above that is not recommended unless you have a tuned car and preferably changed intakes too. |

I haven't personally used it in the bimmer. I did how ever use it when i had my 12 Volkswagen jetta and personally i saw a pretty big difference between gas with corn and using real gas. When i used real gas my jetta would get a good 4mpg jump. Anyways the hickory point gas station in irmo right down the road from Jim Hudson Toyota offers ethanol free fuel, as does city gas on bush river road right across from the wal-mart, then there is also the shell station on leesburg rd. But the hickory point station only offers from what i remember to be 87 octane fuel.

You guys really need to lobby BMW to import more diesel engined motors, they may rattle a bit more but the mpg and torque more than make up for that !

And getting the contiguous 48 states to agree to impose quality restrictions on diesel so it doesn't ruin the engine of imported cars would be a neat trick. Especially given the powerful farming lobby. So what we get are special US models, which don't sell well because in the mind of the average American, a diesel is still a slow, stinky and soot-spewing contraption. Never mind the evidence to the contrary. |

I watching Mazda to see how they make out with their Skyactiv Diesel in the US. No "blue" liquid adder required either.
Thank the EPA for low sulfer diesel and ethanol fiasco (and the corn lobby, etc, etc, )

I really wish we could get them to bring more down here and just suit the engines to US diesel. I did get a chance to drive the X5 with a diesel and it was amazing.
