Is this normal in the x1 28i?

Hi,

I have a 2012 X1 28i with 8 speed auto. I have had it for quite a while now. Although I love the low end torque in this car, but this is what I have noticed from a stoplight. I accelerate pretty slow-moderately from a traffic light usually around 2000-2500 rpm. What I noticed is that the cars next to me usually beat me in terms of acceleration even the bus. I mean if I'm accelerating the car at 2500rpm, then they gotta be accelerating the car 3000rpm and up. Is this because of the 8 speed auto? It seems to shift upwards really fast from 0-60km/h (0-40miles/hr), probably shifted twice or 3 times maybe even 4 times, so most of the time during acceleration is lost from shifting into a higher gear? It's a 6.7 second car, it's got the low end grunt from 1500rpm, but it doesn't seem to pull very well from a dead stop? I know I'm contradicting myself here but this is what I feel.

I also have a 2005 chevrolet cavalier, the car seem to accelerate faster from 2500-3000rpm from a dead stop than the x1.

I'm not a pro car guy, am I losing optimal power band from certain rpm ranges since it's a turbo? Or is this an issue with both the turbo and transmission. Please let me know.

Thanks.

On my s28i I noticed that you have to be really precise with the throttle or the trans hesitates to decide on gear.

If I get back off the gas I dial in, I think this is where the trouble is for me.

You have to give some gas and hold which can be too much pin you in the seat acceleration.

Maybe put in Eco boost to dull response, and nail it when you go.

On a side note the car is a beast when flooring to pass.

I can't believe people want to crank up the power.

I have trouble finding road to use it, so I'll need some more track days.

I find the same thing happens. It seems to be the first 2 gears for me, as soon as I hit 3rd I usually start pulling away. I find if you use sport on manual mode, it's the exact opposite. It's just the programming to keep the MPG in check.

I agree with both of your posts, especially Twix. I find that during a left turn where I am not going into a dead stop, the car is perhaps still in 3rd gear, then when you push the gas pedal, the thing is a beast.

If I put it into manual mode, the trans definitely holds gear, but there is a big time between the moment I pull the transmission backwards and the moment the transmission shifts itself. (I don't have the paddles)

I have another question. Mine is a 2013 base model x1 28i with xdrive, no paddle shifters and navigation. Reading through the forum, some people say that when they put their car into sport mode (DS), they feel better accelerating from a dead stop. My question is does my car have sport mode? I have shifted my lever to the left while in drive, the center display in the speedometer just says the current gear I am in, not DS mode. Does my car have DS mode or is there another button I have to press?

Just pull the stick left. DS will appear and that's sport mode. If you push forward in DS, or pull back, you'll be in manual mode.

DS (Sport mode) makes all the difference to me. The car goes from just leisurely cruising around town to begging to be driven all the way to redline! I ONLY drive my '14 X1 sDrive28i in DS...unless I'm on the freeway. In DS mode you lose the top overdrive gear which translates to higher than necessary RPMs when just cruising at 65-75mph.

Drive in DS you won't regret it! And yes, it should say DS on the display when it is selected. I find the 2.0T engine sound to be really really good...love hearing it tear through the gears.
