Pedal placement in cramped footwell

Has anyone noticed that the gas pedal on the x1 is further to the left than you would like and that right foot space for the driver is cramped?

I assume that this is because the transmission tunnel intrudes into the footwell forcing BMW to locate the pedals further to the left. This is my first BMW and I'm finding it strange coming from a front wheel drive car. Anyway, driving for extended periods makes my right knee and/or hip sore, a problem I never had driving FWD cars. Anyone else notice this?
