Need my X1 by 5-17-13. When to order?

I need to have my car by May 17, 2013 since my current lease ends on the 18th. I was planning on ordering my car the 3rd week of March for a delivery time of 1st week of May. Since MY2014 has come into play, if i need my car by the first week of May when should i realistically place my order? Should i place my order now since production does not start till March??

Details of the car i plan on ordering:

sDrive28
Mineral White
Black Leather
Msport package 19"
Lighting Package
Ultimate Package
Heated Seats

BMW does have ways to extend your lease a few months if needed to help with purchasing another BMW, search the forum and you'll get general answers on that subject.

For May 17th ED of an X1 you can order now if you can find a dealer who's up on the new 2014 X1 info and has allocations (Most dealers seem to have them or aware of them now). Less than 3 months out from ED can be a rush if you're doing more than a quick grab-n-go delivery so don't wait too long.

Can't speak to the issues of dealing with the model year change but just on the general delivery question you need to allow 8-10 weeks for delivery to California. That delivery time is from production start, not from when you place the order. For my car it was pretty much exactly 8 weeks from the start of production to delivery to southern CA. If you miss the first ship sailing it can run longer than that. Pretty much everything ran perfectly on my delivery but if you absolutely have to have the car by a certain date you should allow an extra two weeks just to be safe.

Based on that I'd look to place my order with a dealer that could get me a production date the first week of March.

Thanks for the help guys.

I am going to talk to my CA today about getting a production slot for the first week of March. I don't plan on doing the ED option.

Since MY2014 does not start till March 1st do you think there will be an extended delay in taking delivery of the car in 8-10weeks?

Yes, there's a rumor going around that EPA certification for the X1 won't be ready until May 13th and that would be the first day X1's can leave BMW in Germany. The earliest confirmed date for a car was an ED for May 13th. We're hearing though that someone people are trying to get times before that so stay tuned.

That is what I was concerned with. Well looks like i will turn my car in on May 18th then wait for delivery. I really did not want to go that route but it appears I have no other option at this point. I will confirm with my CA today.

I may just go with another 3 series if it is going to take too long.

What would you guys do:

Wait for an X1 or go for a 328I?

it all depends on your stile of driving and how you deal with life situations, I like the X1 because if I go fast food shopping... at the drive through window I don't like looking up , I like the ride Height and the roominess of the X1, just take on cosideration what your needs are and order one now...the dealer can hold the vehicle for you if you want if it arrives early.

Just spoke to my CA and submitted my order to him. He is going to place the order today and i should get a production number once it is in. He did confirm that production starts the first week of March but was unsure about delivery time and EPA certification for the MY2014. Once the order is placed i will have firmer information.

I test drove the X1 and fell in love with the sporty feel along with the higher ride height compared to my E90 and even the F30. i have had the F30 as a rental car several times and i was not impressed at all with the overall feel, it's just missing something.

The F30 electric steering just doesn't feel "BMW" unless you order Variable Sport Steering (which I doubt your loaners had). It's pretty good with VSS. The F30 328i blows the E90 328i out of the water based on my driving.

The sDrive X1s have a similar problem with electric steering (I'm curious as to how close the servotronic option comes to feeling like the F30 w/VSS). The xDrives have the hydraulic steering assist BMW veterans are used to.

the dealer should be able to hold your car, i don't know how long they will hold it though.....

FWIW:

I just placed an order for a MY2014 on friday and production is not slated to start for MY2014 till the first week of March. Also i have read on the forum that the earliest MY2014 will be available for shipment and ED pick up will be May 13th since EPA certification is not supposed to take place until the first week of May.

After all that it looks like i won't end up getting my car till mid June. I just really wish that i could have had my car once my E90 lease ends. The anticipation is killing me though and I am about 3months out.
