What are you crazy. I'm not getting mine wet.

I still think this should not have been called an X.
It is a 3 series wagon type unit with some (a little bit) height.

Maybe it should have been called;

323dh (no people would think it is a hybrid or D$%^ head)
323dx (no, x already exists, not here in Australia though)
3 Allroad (yuk)
3 Outback (no no no)

I hate people thinking it is based on a 1 series

Any suggestions?

Hi h.stardom welcome to the forum.

I cannot seem to find an official figure anywhere but I would hazard a guess around 400mm, maybe slightly more. It's probably the same as say a ford kuga. I have had it at least that deep crossing some burns up north but I would not go much deeper as you then have to start trusting the door seals. In an emergency they say you can go as deep as the engines air intake but I have no idea how deep this is. You will probably get wet inside though.

Thanks Yohans, I have not seen that before.

Do think that they err on the side of caution a bit though as I have certainly had it deeper than that.

Mmm, will think twice now.

I think there is definitely some safety margin built in to this measurement, however given that mine (and most others) is a diesel and diesel engines get wrecked with the slightest intake of water I wouldn't take it more than what they state.

I think the air intake is a lot higher than that but what concerns me more are open (non-insulated) electrics in the engine bay and the effect of icy water on a hot engine, gearbox or diff.

I agree though and will be sticking to slightly shallower fords.

Many of us have said this before, the X1 is a crossover, not a true bundu basher (off roader).

You might also consider that there are lots of electrics around the front bumper and in it, as well as surrounding the headlights. That is a bigger problem than air intake, I suspect. I take the 300mm owners manual limit seriously.
