Uh oh! Didnt know that rear-view camera wasn't part of any package
I wasn't aware that the rear-view camera wasn't part of ANY of the packages and require additional $450 as an optional addon.
Now that the car has been delivered, I am wondering if I can just buy a OEM camera for $450 from BMW and have someone install for me? Would that work? The car is already equipped with technology, premium and msport package. So the nav screen is there, and already have the parking distance control, front and rear. I stupidly thought that's already with rear-camera included. Btw, I am from Canada.. so I am not sure if that's any difference in terms of packages in US or other parts of the world. And for those of you in Canada, does your mirror folds as well? I am trying to find that info on the bmw.ca website but couldn't find any. Thanks guys. |

Mirrors do fold, press the button next to the mirror selector switch. It can also be coded in to fold automatically.
As for the camera thing, you're kinda SOL. It will cost far more than what it's worth.

My X1 was purchased previously loved (used) and it too didn't have the rear-view camera. While I was disappointed, I was choosing from what was on the market. I have researched about adding the camera and came to same conclusion as Twix ... "SOL".
I still read and research options but not with much hope anymore. Last edited by BaritoneJP; 01-21-2015 at 11:37 AM.. Reason: sentence composition |

Sometimes I just remind myself that maybe I shouldn't care about it much, since I already have PDC and its 'kindda' the same thing for me, since I don't do a whole lot of parallel parking.

I have a fused neck, C2-T2, and I would rather rely on my mirrors, than trying to decipher what the image is on the tiny screen. I don't have the parking sensors, but they would be excellent, in combination with Mk1 eyeball. My wife's Ford Edge has a big screen BU camera, and even with a clean camera lens, it's better checking the mirrors, than staring down at the screen.

Just checked Edmunds. I'm wrong; the rear view camera is part of the "Ultimate" package, and not a stand alone option. Oops! wrong again. Available with the "Driver Assistance Package". Much cheaper that way, and probably more affordable to retrofit a factory setup. Last edited by zeevette; 01-21-2015 at 05:00 PM.. Reason: error in content |

Call the dealership you purchased from and ask. It's a $3100 option once you get all the tech package etc. It used to be a $450 option after upgrading to the tech pkg and getting front PDC ($450). I'm sure it would cost in the neighbourhood of $2200 for them ti get the part and install it for you. Maybe more.

If you went with the BMW route the warranty is fine. If you go the aftermarket route and have to splice wires or something, BMW may not warranty the affected electrical components. Nor will they warranty the aftermarket unit.
The camera is a stand alone option which would have required you to get both premium and tech pkgs.

I didn't get the tech package. It's worthless to me. I like to watch the road while driving, not at pretty album art.

The ultimate pkg is just the premium, driver assistance, and tech pkgs rolled into one. The camera is part of the driver assistance pkg which requires the tech pkg. |

Our packages are built to our market. The ultimate would be easier for dealerships for sure. The driver's assistance package comes with the technology and executive packages. It's kind of split between them now.
I was never sure about the hands free thing they talk about in the ConnectedDrive pack. Maybe it's for use with the voice recognition and display on the nav screen. I can make calls with my phone without using my hands to dial on my phone. I can't use the steering wheel however. Maybe that's what it's for.
