If the X1 doesn't come out for at least a year I'll get a Countryman S.
Sorry, but still cannot see how the X1 will compete with the X3 with the average consumer. They are completely different.

X1=Crossover X3=SUV

And they differ substantially in price, like for like.

I can see myself replacing my Mini with a Countryman though.

I don't understand what you are saying one is a crossover and one is an SUV. They are both crossovers. One is built on the 3 series frame and one is built on the 1 series frame which is essentually a shortened 3 series frame. They are only about $4,000 apart (base model in the US) and will have the same engines next year. X3 will drop the 3.0 NA for 2.0 Turbo. The X1 is about 300 pounds lighter. They both seat 5 although 3 get crambed in the backseat. Conversely the X3 will be cutting into X5 sales if they can produce enough of them and it's already happening.

Just one clarification. In the US an SUV is a body on frame and a crossover is a unibody which they both the X3 and X1 are. Even the new Ford Explorer is now called a crossover because they switched from the old body on frame so maybe it's just terminology where we differ. BMW doesn't call them SUV's they are SAV's whatever that means. I had an X5 when they first came out and when the X3 came out in 2004 I downsized, got a 2007 X3 and decided to get the Clubman S because the X3 got poor gas milage (about 18 mpg US). The transmission was the big problem and I think it was actually a GM 6 speed automatic.

The x1 is btw based upon the 3series!

the x3 is based upon - i don't know - just compare the 1series, x1 and 3series touring next to each other and you'll see that the x1 is basically a ramped up 3series touring.

Looks like you did your own definition.

Crossover = fancier SUV name, but this is the same damn thing now. A few years ago, it was more like a direct derivative of wagon. Outback, Allroad, Pacifica, Freestyle, Class R. No more the case.

The X1 is based on the current 3-series platform. The new X3 will share it's platform/chassis with the forthcoming new 3-series. The X1 will then be a generation behind.
