E84 X1 water pump lifespan

Hello all, my 2013 X1 with 80K miles on the clock. I'm wondering if you folks have any input on the water pump longevity? It looks like a stand alone electric water pump design, similar to what's in my 335I. The 335I's water pump was good for 75K miles. They all failed in that range. Wondering what to expect with this car.

I replaced mine at around 100k for preventive maintenance. The old one seemed fine though.

Do you have an N55? Is so, yes, it's the same pump as your 335. But I didn't think the newer pump revisions experienced the same failure rates as the older ones (had a couple of 08 N54s that needed one, of course).

Anyway, I doubt I'll be doing this as a preventative item (it's a bit PITA to swap out).

Well, I think I jinxed myself. Disregard my above post.

Wife called last night from the side of the road, 75 miles from home. Overheated. No doubt the WP.

45k miles.

At least I don't have to replace this one myself...

And pretty freaking ridiculous BMW can fix this issue after a decade of regular failures.

I'm going to ask her to buy us an AMG E63 wagon next go round...see how that works out. What could go wrong.

Are there any indications that performance tunes, JB4 MHD etc. are leading to these water pumps failing earlier?

Not that I see. They fail all the time stock too. It's not an overworked/loaded issue...from what I've read, they can't keep the circuit boards dry.

So that's 45k N55 X1 (my wife's car...who puts around town for the most part)

~70k '08 N54 135

and sometime before 60k on our '08 N54 535/

I'm 3/3!

If I buy these motors in the future, I think I'm leaning toward 50k replacement as preventative. Something I'd NEVER thought I'd say.

Ugh, don't say that. I just hit 52k on my '14 35i, and It looks like a fun job to do the replacement. I want to replace my spark plugs before I consider that - and I plan on getting everything from FCPEuro for the free lifetime warranty. My next oil change, I'll be sending back the used oil so I can get a refund minus shipping (hey, it's not taking advantage if they TELL you to do it).

I think I'm getting a used Mini S in manual to put my most of my work miles on, because it's killing me.

It's a tough job in the driveway your first time, but nothing insurmountable.

The car in general is reliable. Actually, sans the WP, the N55/E90 is a pretty darn solid car. While I support buying a cheap, fun driver like the Mini S...don't do it for fear of driving the X1. #1, the X1 is the more reliable car, #2, the X1 isn't fun enough to justify it being anything but the daily.

The better call is buying a Miata, etc. to serve as a fill-in should the X1 be in need of love.

I'm looking at Miata's (and used Z4's) too, I just need something under 10k to drive to work to help the X1 last longer. At this rate, it would have 120-130k miles on it before I even have it paid off - Not ideal.

Min popped at exactly 70k miles, while on a road trip, 5 miles from the destination. 1800$ at fairfax BMW, although they helped fix a few other small things for me while they were under there.

That's criminal. It's $500-600 in parts at retail dealer prices...

Mine went somewhere around 62-66k. Started with the cooling fan acting strange, but the vehicle was totally drivable.

They quoted me about $1200 for the job, if my CPO hadn't covered it.

EDIT: I have an N55.
