Valve clatter?

I've noticed that there seems to be some valve clatter when I lean on the throttle under load (going uphill for instance). It's not there all the time, but I've noticed it.
If this is normal, I won't sweat the small stuff, but if it's an issue, I'll want to talk to the dealer. Really like this car, and I intend to keep it for the long haul.

What do you mean by valve clatter?
Maybe try and record the sound if at all possible and post it on here?

Pinging can easily be mistaken for valve clatter, that is why i mention bad gas.
We had something here locally where all the tanks at the gas station was filled with the lowest grade gas. I think is was almost all the Chevron stations

You might just be hearing the injectors as well. They're very loud on this N20. Do you hear it at idle standing next to the car?

Yeah, I'd get a tank of premium at another tier i station: Chevron, Shell, Texaco, Exxon, Sunoco, etc.

Your description sounds like it's running 86 or 87 oct.

I was really suspicious of one tank of gas I had purchased, and refilled elsewhere, which made a huge improvement.
Again, I seem to hear this under load, and especially when the weather is colder. It is my understanding that there are 'knock sensors' on modern engines that retard the timing when they perceive knock, and perhaps some of that is happening.
It is not an everyday occurrence, and, yes, perhaps what I'm calling 'valve clatter' is indeed pinging or knocking.
I'll have a listen standing next to the car as well. I'm planning on keeping this one for a long time (I'm not crazy about the new model).
Thanks, and happy for any other thoughts,
Moon

It probably can't retard enough to compensate for the very good compression these cars give.

I had a F150 straight 6 once that could tell the weather. When it was hot and dry, it would clatter under acceleration, but it ran 175k miles before using oil.

Clatter shows it's got plenty of advance in the timing, and that colder air and turbo gives greater compression;just keep 91 or highest oct you can buy.
