Dishwashers
Ok, sort of a lame thread for OT, but I figure no one here washes dishes by hand, so there is a wealth of experience.
Our 13+ y.o. dishwasher is giving up the ghost. Consumer Reports (not the best indicator, IMO, but Wifey likes them) rates a Bosch as their best value. But that same machine gets trashed in Amazon reviews. Not the first time I've seen CR recommend a dog. So offer up some praise or warnings. What's good and what isn't?

What's your price range?
I've used Bosch 800 and Miele Futura and they are both great. Bosch was $800 and I think miele was about $1000 with a discount. They both are super quite and are panel ready so you can have that custom look. If I were to buy again, I would just get Bosch because once installed, they look the same and washes the same. So unless your kitchen has another Miele appliance, saving money would worth better for your $$. |

I don't know, my 22 year old dishwasher has been working great. Some days are better than others where I need to give her a good kick in the side...., almost like the mechanics are loose inside, but I digress.
Anyways, after she's done, I always give her some dick as a reward. Thinking it's about time to find a newer model, though. |

This is the updated version of what I have: http://www.whirlpool.com/kitchen-1/d...81/WDF540PADW/
Very quiet, I have been running it over a year now - zero problems. Cleans well though I find you need to use a rinse aid if you want everything to dry well. Other stuff I like: --Silverware tray in the door. Easy to put stuff in without having to reach. --1 hr wash option --It's quiet!

Stop me if you've heard this one..
So my wife asks "when are we going to get a dishwasher" and I say "I thought I married one?"

This is an updated version of the one I've had for three and half years now which has been working great. It is stainless inside and out and runs incredibly quiet.

The Bosch dishwashers don't have a built in disposal so every few weeks you have to tear out the filter and rinse the crud off of it. I didn't think that it would be that big of a deal, but in reality it's a minor annoyance that I would rather be without.

With just my wife and me, we don't actually use our regular dishwasher unless we have a bunch of people over (and usually we use paper plates and plastic silverware for that). So unless it's a fancy meal with a bunch of people, we actually do wash by hand. And when I say we, I mean my wife.

I also saw Bosch getting trashed pretty much everywhere. I went with GE Profile for our house and rental property and they have, thus far, been great. We run ours probably 3-4x each week.
I will say that GE's quality control is abysmal. I received two ranges with the same crooked door and a damaged door on the dishwasher. They ended up cutting me a check both times in order for me to keep them.

I got my wife a nice padded cushion to stand on in front of the sink. Her feet were starting to hurt.

We've become poor envrionmentalists and use a ton of paper plates. My sister-in-law moved in and does most of the washing (by hand) as well as laundry. We buy her smokes. . . Don't we have a first-world problems thread somewhere? |

I can tell you - I bought a high end GE Profile a few years back...and the thing is junk. 3 sprayers...and the dishes still don't always come clean. I thought it may have been a change in the lack of phosphates...but even getting some phosphate detergent - it doesn't help.
The whirlpool I had before it was great...only reason why I changed it out was cause the Mrs wanted matching stainless So, long story short...don't go with GE.

I have a Bosch and have had it 14 years no problems, never serviced. Yes you do need to clean the filter once in a while, takes all of 2 minutes. It replaced a POS Thermador which sounded like a freight train and only spread the crap around the dishes. I'd personally buy another one but do know Bosch is not the same company it was in 99 as far as appliances go.
