Rear View Mirror With Homelink Retrofit

Hey guys

So we got my wife a '14 X1 xdrive 28i about three weeks and so far it's great.

The options we got are rather minimal: tech and lighting package.

I did the homelink retrofit on my e90 a while ago and it was somewhat involving and required a new harness.

But with the X1 it was super easy. Bought a used rear view mirror with auto dimm and homelink off eBay for like $150 and it was plug and play.

Took me less than half hour to do and I was expecting that I would need to replace the harness. But it came pre wired

I hope this helps anyone considering doing the same.

Check out this thread for more info

DIY: The final Homelink retrofit guide http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=450516

I was basically done at step two. I unplugged the harness from the old mirror and connected it to the new one.

Great to know this is such an easy job! For some reason my garage door openers just cannot send a signal through my X1 like they do through my other cars. I literally have to pull within 5 feet of the door and still open the window. Me being lazy, I just want a built-in button.

Did you buy the exact E84 mirror, or will any E9X mirror work plug and play? If you would be so kind as to provide the part number (if you know it) of the mirror you got off eBay I'd be much obliged. =)

It depends on what other options you have e.g. high beam assist (51169225980) or without (51169192335).

As far as I know BMW standardized the rear view mirrors for quite some time. The attachment mechanism is the same but the are some minor differences such as the size of the clown nose and whether it has a compass or homelink. The more modern ones have a low profile clown nose.

Yeah I think it'll fit.

I'm not sure if you'll need the wiring harness though. But I guess you can always try it and get the harness afterwards if needed.

Today I installed the Homelink/auto-dimming and compass mirror and it took only 5 minutes. I removed the trim, twisted the mirror clock-wise and with a tiny screwdriver, released the wiring harness from the old mirror and then reversed the process and it works beautifully! I don't have the automatic high beam option, so I used mirror P/N 51169192335. I purchased a used one on Ebay for $100. This has to be the best upgrade I could have done to add convenience to the car. Thanks for posting this Xpander and others that provided the details!

Most of the used rear view mirrors on ebay do not have a part number associated with them, did they say what model or year it came from? Will any E9X work?

Thanks for posting this info, I too would like to exchange my plain mirror for one with a compass. If anyone out there has one please contact me.

It should work, though the P/N is stamped on the mirror bracket so the seller could easily verify for you. The P/N I referenced was perfectly pin-compatible. Good Luck!

Best mod ever for my 2013 X1!!.

Bought generic replacement from ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=321297286291

Did the mod right in the post office parking lot.

1. Be careful with the plastic nose so you don't scratch it (I was careful).
2. Reset the compass by pushing the reset button until "C", then drive in a small circle. (verify the region code - 11 here in MD).
3. Homelink required me to push the "learn" button on my opener, but other than that - easy.

Now does anyone want to buy a manual mirror?

And at $99, it's a great deal! Why doesn't BMW get over themselves and just install these on ALL of their cars! The cheapest option package to get this mirror is $3,950 and contains a bunch of stuff most buyers don't want!

I just bought the identical one using your link. Did you have to buy the wiring harness or is it plug and play?

Completely plug-n-play, identical. Mine is a 2013 X1. I'm still ecstatic.

I did this mod today. It took under 10 minutes. By far the best $105.00 I've spent on my X1.
