Wow, just wow. I just read this entire post and see both sides. Honestly the X1 and M3 are apples to oranges and if you guys are going to compare them then compare them stock VS stock AND with equal road and weather conditions. Done and done.

I am an owner of a turbo current generation X5 and E92 M3. It is night and day between the two. Not even in the same class. So I can only imagine the current X1 VS E92 M3.

Thanks...

Personally, I don't care about 0-60 times; if I did, I would've gotten a 335i.
Glad to hear.
This was really key for me. The travel-ness of it.
What really is important to me, is the passing.
I think at one point in our lives, we've all had that 110 hp car that you had to travel with, you get behind a nice slow RV, and need to pass.
Only when you find a huge long stretch, you goto pass, step on the gas, and all that happens is the motor gets louder.
Half hour later, you pass the RV.
I'm hoping thats not the case with the X1.

I was hoping to jump to this car, as I'm coming from a e92 335i xDrive and I wanted a factory suspension that was better than xDrive, but still maintain the power of the turbo 6. The suspension was awesome, however, I can attest to these slow 0 - 60 times. It's a different engine obviously (n54 vs n55), but it just didn't feel as punchy as my 335i. I hammered it pretty hard using the paddle shifters, and when I got back in my car, I pretty much decided that I wasn't going to bother changing cars. I can deal with it being slightly heavier and a tad higher, but the engine just doesn't seem to pull nearly as hard.

If BMW planned on doing a PPK for the X1 335i, I think that extra 25/30 hp would really help the cause, but as of now, I can't justify losing power to upgrade the suspension and gain some cargo space. I think I'm going to just upgrade to KW V1's. It's a shame because I really wanted to like the X1. All these above 6 seconds 0 - 60 times can't just be a coincidence.
Not sure where you got the 6 second thing from. TFL does a show on the X1 335 xDrive and it does 6.10 & 5.99 0-60. But at 6000 feet! Same X1 is 5.21 at sea level with a normal (no brake boosting) launch (there is a video of it on here somewhere).
In contrast, the new Jeep SRT8 (my favorite comparo) ran a 4.85 at sea level, but only a 6.10 at 6000 feet.

Also, the X1 is only going to be about a tenth slower to 60 and maybe a quarter second slower in the quarter than the sedan.
(Weigh difference of 180 pounds and better aero for the sedan)

The sedan will be a little faster/better handling than the X1. No doubt. If that is your criteria, get the sedan. I gave up a little for the ground clearance, smooth ride, and ease of use for skiing gear. I test rode the N55 sedan 335 xDrive. It does feel much faster, but isn't. Sitting lower also makes it feel faster.
Have you considered Dinan? For either sedan or X1 it will give you the power you want (or JB4, etc if not concerned about warranty).
TFL show was a big part of my decision for buying the X1 (I wanted a SUV).
If you don't need/want the "advantages" of a crossover SUV the sedan is a better performer.

Lol. Yes, different purposes. All things equal your sedan is faster and better handling. Now park it over a parking lot curb, hit a bad dip, or race an X1 AWD up a poorly plowed snowy mountain....
Equally modded X1 will always be A LITTLE slower than the equivelant sedan/coupe N55.
The 500 pounds is because you have no AWD or cargo ability, more like 180 if we are being fair about equality (AWD and *******.
That said, your car does sound pretty kick @ss!

The fact of the matter is, the X1 is the perfect only car for a lot of people. Moreover, it's actually completely unique in the marketplace far as I can tell.

The X1 is the only car on the market I could find that satisfied the following criteria:

1. Enough ground clearance to get over 6+ inches of snow, potholes, steep driveway curbs, but not too much ground clearance to the point of a severe handling penalty.

2. Enough straight line speed to beat a Cayenne Turbo or M3 in a straight line with a simple tune. Let's face it - for 99% of people, the most important type of speed is straight line on the road - be it stoplight to stoplight or passing/merging on the highway. The X1 is actually better suited for this kind of driving than even the M3 due to the torque.

3. Enough cargo capacity to make a run to Ikea or home depot. I've already fit an entire Ikea Tobo TV stand in the back of the X1

4. A high quality interior.

5. AWD for inclement weather

Literally no other car - not the M135i, not the WRX STI, not the X3, etc, etc fit these criteria. That's why the X1 will be a great seller in the US - a country where the climate and requirements are very different than other portions of the world.
Didn't read this reply yet. Wow, that about pegs it.
With my Dinan kit I am within a few tenths 0-60 of a X5M and beat a lot of unsuspecting cars out there. For a little over 40grand and a BMW?

I agree totally! I've owned 3 135's all manuals, 08,10,12. Great cars for sure. quirky looks great performance, pure BMW! But I love hatchback utility and I love the looks of my X1 Msport 2.8 in BS! I only have a few hundred miles on her...bottom line ride is great, room great, hatch great, tranny great, mileage not sure yet, styling is totally nowadays. I miss the throttle response of my 135i manual, so I'm opting for BMS stage 2. Hopefully the gap will be closed enough to me a happy camper once I get the upgrade. But man, towing ability to 4000 lbs, mids 20's fuel economy, room for several sets of clubs plus cart, plus baby seat for grandson, silent ride! If I can just get rid of the turbo lag I'd be soo happy.

I read the first 3 pages of this thread...very entertaining.

I've owned 3 e84s and, IMHO, it's the best all around small SAV (to use BMW's acronym) you can buy.

I also believe that the 35 M version will be a classic right up there with the e9x M.

Mark it down folks, because it's going to happen.
