Exhaust Leak Into the Cabin

Happy New Year All,

I only recently stopped running the A/C, it's finally cool enough for that, but unless I'm running the fat above mid speed, the cabin smells like exhaust is leaking into it. Has anyone dealt with that? I won't be able to make it to my dealership before next month and I was wondering if anyone has experienced that.

Thanks!

My 2014 X1 s28i has always had a faint gasoline odor when not running the A/C.

I run vents on auto, but you can set vents to manual close, and try that.

Also, check the weatherstrip around back hatch for closing properly.

Is it fuel or exhaust gas?

Hatch exhaust gas is a good idea. With the abrupt aero profile change of a hatchback, I can see a stronger trailing vortex causing exhaust gas ingestion.

Thanks!!

Only ever smelled exhaust gas when following a particularly dirty diesel pick up truck. I practically never run A/C, but I have noticed that in many cars, including this one, when you stop running the A/C there is kind of a bad odor for a little while.

Try running the ventilation on full blast through all the vents without the AC, maybe vary the temperature, see if it starts to clear up after a little while.

It's not a bad odor, definitely exhaust. It goes away if run the vent fan at half speed or above so I'm guessing it's not coming from the vents. I figured a missing plug in the firewall or cabin or as 0w40x1 suggested, a leaky hatch seal. I wonder if the CO detector in my house is sensitive enough to pick it up.

Have you tried a visual inspection of the seals?

And makes sense that it would be a missing or broken seal as the fans would create a pressure and prevent the exhaust from entering.

Just remembered reading about vents behind the rear bumper that are used to relieve pressure from closing doors and such. Maybe one of them is stuck open? See if the smell is from one of the cut outs in the carpeting in the back of the trunk.

I inspected the rear seal/mating surfaces during lunch and couldn't find any damage. I ran the car in the parking lot with A/C and fan off, fan on, and A/C on for about 10 mins each. By the end I could smell faint traces of exhaust.

The stuck open vents sounds reasonable. I remember sometimes the doors opening with the same vacuum resistance as a fridge door. I figured the air contracted and sucked the doors in on cooler days. This hasn't happened in a while even on colder days, which is in line with a vent stuck open and equalizing the pressure.

Doors on ours never feel like there's a vacuum when opening them, could be the vents are on a servo that keeps them open during specific conditions. If that servo burnt out that would explain it.

Are you still on a warranty? Maybe just take it in to the dealer?

I am under warranty, but can't make it to the dealership (1.5 hours away) anytime in the next few weeks.

Yesterday on the highway, I had the same: the cabin smelled like diesel exhaust was leaking into it. Not the hole time, but in 1 hour 2-3 times. No Idea what it is and in 5 years it was the first time. Maybe it comes thrue the forced ventilation underneath the rearbumper??

What was different during the times you smelled the exhaust? Going slow, fast, following a big diesel truck, etc...?
