Tires, again

Did some preliminary research on the Tire Rack; Bridgestone Drive Guard runflats seem to be the recommended. I've the standard 225 45-18 tires, and prefer to stick to the runflats.
Opinions? Suggestions?
Thanks,
Moon

I hear you on run flats but I went with NON run flat Pirelli. Here's why:

1) The RFTs provide a much harsher (not stiffer or better) ride. I now know this first hand.

2) Remember - RFT is only good for 50 miles. The times I WORRY more about flats are when I'm 100s of miles away from home. SO whether RFT or regular, I'm screwed if I'm out of town.

3) The kit from Slime has good recommendations and apparently works. If I get an on-road flat, I can call AAA or try to fill with the slime thing. It's small and fits in one of the side compartments in the hatch.

4) My last "on road" flat was probably 35 years ago. 95% of my flats are slow leaks that I notice in the garage.

The Bridgestones - have you looked at them? I know "ugly" is a personal preference matter but I thought they looked bad on the X1. SEEING them clinched the deal for me.

Having said all that, my number 2 choice is the tire you mention... even it if is ugly.

We had the OEM Pirelli RF and was happy to ditch them. Here was one oddity we found when swapping wheels. One of the run flats had what we were initially told was the tell-tell sign that it had been run flat. Yet it had not. The sign was some delimitation on the inside all the way around the tire wall. In talking to the folks at Tire Rack they said when truly run flat the inside tire wall would be marbled due the heat that is generated. Another tire had some similar delimitation but only in spots. I really was not sure what think.

FWIW we went with the Michelin Pilot Sports from Tire Rack and stuck with the 225/45/R18. These are non-RF. And like salzo above I am going to be more than 50 miles home and in many case more than 50 miles from a tire store so RF are of no use. So we toss in a repair kit or a spare tire.

+1 on the non-RFT

+1 on the can of slime being a better option over RFT's when out of town (or in town for that matter)

I have Goodyear Assurance Tripletread and am very happy with them. They're 225-50/17 mounted on the factory rims. Have had very good experience with Bridgestone Potenza RE760 on my previous car and will go either this route or the Pilot Super Sports when I switch to dedicated summer/winter.

I typically drive 25k miles a year so I stick with run flats. Michelin, I think pilot sports. My brother in law works for Michelin so I get a discount, otherwise I would buy the same thing. (Double talk intended)

I'm driving a E84 2015 M Sport with GoodYear EfficientGrip Run Flat. My first X1 ( 2012 ) had OEM Pirelli Centurato Run Flat which I had to change after only two summer. To replace those Pirellis, I picked Bridgestone Potenza S001 Run Flat. The pattern is awsome and it has a really great grip. They would have last longer than the Pirellis so they would be a good choice.

The new Bridgestone Driveguard are intriguing. The UTQG is higher than the Potenza S001 so they will for sure last longer and they are cheaper. But they will be more "touring" than "Sport".

For the price I would choose:

1- Bridgestone Driveguard Run Flat UTQG 460 A A
2- Bridgestone Potenza S001 Run Flat UTQG 280 A A
3- Goodyear Efficient Grip Run Flat UTQG 340 A A

My favorite to date is the Potenza S001 followed by the Efficient Grip that I'm driving right now. Good balanced between comfort, durability and sportiness.

The Potenza S001 is way ahead the best looking and sportiest of the 3 though. It would have lasted at least 3 summer I think.

You have other options with Dunlop, Continental and Pirelli but they are very pricey compared to those three.

The UTQG is :

460 the Thread. Ho long will it last. The Higher the better. In normal condition ( light foot ) you should get around ("460" X 2 X 100 ) minus 10 000 so around 82 000 Km out of a 460 rated tire.

Know that 400 on a Pirelli could be different than 400 at Bridgestone. This is tricky but the rule of thumb I gave you should do the math you need to choose.

So around 50000 Km for a 280 and 60 000 from a 340.

But this is also related to the first "letter"

The first letter is often a double letter like " AA ". This mesure the breaking performance on wet surface ( traction ).

A Tire with better traction should wear quickly than one with an " A " traction. Better the grip quicker the wear.

A is very good. AA is excellent and so on ...

The last "letter" is a reference to the "Temperature" always single letter here.

Again "A" is the best. You will also see "B" sometimes. If you drive in hot weather ( california, florida, texas ... ) "A" should be your goal.

Hope this will help you !

As I mentioned in one of the other threads... I just picked up a set of these. Only a few hundred miles on the but they are noticeably quieter and the ride is softer then the OEM Pirelli's. I haven't noticed any substantial increase in body roll that I hear the non RFT's can cause.

I've had the Bridgestone Driveguards for over 14 months/12K miles now and LOVE them. Much more compliant ride than the factory Continental RFTs that came on the car. They really are a great compromise and the price is not bad either. I upsized to 235/45/18 when I got them and they really are a great tire.

Put it this way: They will probably go on our family's other nonRFT cars when they need tires.

i had the s001 RFT on our previous F30 335. They were solid / i'd use them again. They are summer only though and wear a bit faster than the all seasons

i guess i'm in the minority, where I don't mind the stiff ride of the runflats (my F80 has RE11 tires, with a stiff sidewall and stiff suspension anyway) and really like not having to worry about a flat and my wife trying to change a flat or use the tire sealant can.

no issues on my end with the stock pirelli all season RFT and am planning to stick with them, or another OEM all season RFT, depending on what's on sale

Do you all find that these cars are very sensitive to tire balance? My factory tires needed road force balancing early on and I think my new tires need it too. Or am I just too sensitive to balance imperfection?

Those last 2 ratings on tires that fit our cars are worthless.

The tires in these sizes already have very good temp, traction, and high speed capabilities.

The treadwear rating gives an idea of how many miles, and how much traction, but best thing is to read tire tests on TireRack.com, and see what you like a tire to do.

I have been trying to decide which one to go for as well. I'm planning to go 235/45 18 front & 265/40 18 rear on OEM M wheels but rft on this setup doesn't seem to exist and disabling TPMS seems like a huge task if I go non rft which I'm very reluctant to do. Anyways, I've to get rid of Pirelli p7 all season coz having to replace the whole tyre for a small puncture is ridiculous.

Why are you making a connection between RFT and TPMS? You can have TPMS working with any type of tire. (And for that matter, disabling TPMS and enabling FTM is pretty easy if you have someone who can do the coding.)

Why not go with a "Square" setup if the X1 can fit more tire in the front? You can rotate front/rear which will help with wear. It is also nice to get more cornering grip from the wider tire..

I have staggered wheels - 8" in the front & 9" in the rear

That's fine, there is a +/- in terms of wheel width. You could do a square setup

Is your Tyre Monitoring System TPMS?
Mine and I thought the Aust. Cars use ABS. I use ABS on my NON RFT,s.

Like your choice of 235/45F and 265/40R. I,m looking to go that way when my 225/45 - 255/40 wear out.
The Max. Recommended for a 9" Wheel is 265.

I guess it started from 2014 March as there was some minor changes in the options and on the car as well. When I initially put my order in March I was referring to 2013 November option list and there was no option for TPMS at all. After the order the 2014 March option list was out and there was some minor changes in the options list and the telephony which I was paying for became standard option and TPMS was there as an extra cost option. So, got my dealer to swap TPMS with the telephony as the extra cost option.

I'm hoping the tyre choice will turn out to be fine. My only concern at the moment is with the effect of the added side wall height and the slightly wider tyre on same old wheels on steering response and the car handling in the corners.

I want to go all season non-RFT. Any suggestions on the tyres?

I like my Goodyear Assurance Tripletread for all seasons. They're not exactly high performance but they handle everything perfectly so far
