Engine Malfunction Warning

So this morning I was pulling out of the drive to go to work. Reversed down the drive, pulled into the street and shifted to drive. Just after the shift I felt a slight shudder from the engine, but the vehicle pulled away without any problems. After driving about 500 ft. it dinged at me and the engine light came on. The display said there was an engine malfunction but the car would still operate under reduced power and that it should be brought to a service center. When I stopped at the end of the block I restarted the car and the warning was gone and didn't come back.

I'm thinking this was perhaps just some sort of fluke to do with how I shifted it - perhaps didn't have it totally at a stop before I shifted from R to D. I did a quick search on here and didn't see anybody reporting similar things. Anyone have any other guesses? I may give the service center a call, but I'm not sure it's worth bringing it in and hassling with it if the light isn't still on...

Was it the engine symbol with a line through it? If so, was it yellow or red? Our 135i threw the yellow code when the HPFP failed, and like you, it reset when ignition was killed. I'd run it by the dealer to have the code checked when you have a chance.

Yellow with a line through it. I called the service center and their best guess was shifting into drive while the car was still rolling. I'm going to pay attention to it and if anything strange seems to happen I'll bring it by to have the code read.

I personally own a code reader. But if you have an AutoZone auto parts store near by (possibly others parts stores) they will hook up a code reader and tell you what the code is/was for no charge. That way you can know whether it was something important or not.

On my previous X6 I was accelerating pretty quick from a stop and felt a slight hesitation, then it kicked a yellow CEL and went to half power mode. I stopped and pulled out the reader which said I had a misfire on cylinder 7. When I restarted the vehicle it cleared and I drove it back home. Called the dealership and they got me an appointment the next day. I still drove it that afternoon and evening and on into the dealership the next day with nothing popping back up. Once it was looked at the tech discovered the issue was the coil pack on cyl 7 and said it literally broke into pieces when he went to remove it. Needless to say it was replaced.
