Smile X1 Newbie . . .Deep Sea Blue 18d X-Drive

Hi All,

A quick introduction, I'm new to BMW ownership and have picked up a late 2010 X1 18d X-Drive, its the family waggon and hoping it will do the trick.

Specs are;

Deep Sea Blue
Black Navada Leather
Heated Seats
Comfort pack
Star Spoke 18" Alloys
Bluetooth Phone Prep
Cruise Control

Had it for about 3 months now and I can say its a pretty awesome all-rounder, doing everything I expected and more in some cases.

Plans are to pick up a set of used E90 3 series alloys and to fit winter tyres as I'm expecting iffy weather here in Scotland from November onwards, in fact anybody know if there are issues with this? I'm presuming the 3 series has the same off-set etc. .

Just given it a wash, see pics. . .

Cheers
Al

Hi xspencex, and welcome to the forum Its good to see another Name: bagpipe.gif

Also congratulations of your X1! Thats a very nice colour, was my first choice but since I chose the car my wife chose titanium silver .

There is quite a lot written on this forum about snow tyres so have a look around. You are in my neck of the woods so I would add that my local BMW dealer had a deal on Goodyear winters that was hard to beat. For around £800 you get a set on separate steel rims (good if you are using chains), two free change overs a year and best of all they store your alternate set. You know how bad our last winter was, well I did not get stuck once on the X1/winter tyre combination!

Fire away if you have any questions.

This is a pic of the tyre/rim/plastic trim combination. Actually looks quite good in the metal.

Welcome from down under ... nice colour, and the same wheels are on my car (so easy to clean)!

Mario, thiose winter wheels look great ... not much need for them in this part of the world though. Snow is not common, even down here in the bottom bit of Australia (except in the mountains of course).

Thanks guys,

We first placed a deposit on a X1 20d S-Drive in black but switched to the 18d X-drive because we changed our mind and wanted the 4x4 over more power and also the miles were lower, the colour at the time was secondary, however looking at it now I think we got a cracking combo.

Thanks for the heads up on winter tyres, I'll check out the form for threads on the subject, those steels don't look half bad at all.

I have some links to a tyre company that could probably supply winters at cost so that's why I'm thinking of getting used E90 rims.

We moved up to Scotland from London in December exactly at that time when Glasgow ground to a halt. We arrived at around 2am on frozen ice, at -12degC, our Alfa spent most of that journey side ways. Hence the car change!!

Cheers
Al

On a 4WD I would recommend using 4 Winter tyres, and not only 2 which is acceptable on an 2WD SDrive.

Otherwise, great color combination, congrats !

Sam's right, can actually be dangerous fitting tyres with very different levels of grip. Changes the cars handling characteristics.

Yup, would always put 4 on. Not sure it would be wise to fit only two. Massive balance issue etc
