Harmon Kardon: 340w or 600w?

When looking at the vehicle highlights, I see the ad for the 16 speaker 600w system and I was like

Then under the "build your own" I see the old 340w 11 speaker system and I was like

Can anyone confirm which is right?

typical BMW, confuse the hell out of the customer! Just remember the dealer is the LAST person to trust with the right answer

I have the 600 watt system in my X3 and its pretty nice. cost was $950 and included sat radio with 1 year subscription.

The X1 sound upgrade, if only to 340 watts and not including sat radio for $875 is a pretty big rip off.

I am guessing the 340 watt system is what you are getting. BMW should get their facts straight though, simple print out of the page showing 600 watts could get them into a lot of trouble in US courts,

The number of "watts" is the most distorted and manipulated spec in hi fi.

Most watts numbers are classified as "peak power" which means very little.

True "watts" ratings use the letters RMS after the watts and add additional info such as distortion.

I completely agree. My C63 has a 550 watt Bose system and it sounds much better than out X3s 600 watt HK system.

I agree with you there, but I'd obviously rather have the better of the two.

Harman Kardon is a very good brand and is part of Harman International. They make such high end electronics as Lexicon and Mark Levinson.

They are also known to be conservative when rating the power of their high current amps which is a good thing. I've owned several of their products.

Any HK product should sound good. Sound perception is subjective and personal so the only way to judge the quality is to listen to the different systems in person with music you are familiar with.

I just wanted to let everyone know that we have two 2012 X1s. One has the professional system (standard) and the other has the Harmon system. When I listened to both system side by side, the Harmon system is better for sure, in terms of clarity, bass, treble sound reproduction. I would say that it's about 25% better sound overall, and it also has the equalizer built-in the iDrive menu. However, I will also say that the standard system is already quite good, and most people would be happy with the base unit.
