Windshield II

This may seem trivial but its bugging the heck out of me. I have a uniquely difficult time keeping the X1`'s interior windshield streak and smear free. It wasn't bad before cleaning but when someone smudged their fingers on it, I tried cleaning it successively with Windex then plain water then warm soapy water then vinegar in water. I'm unable to get it smear free. Any thoughts?

I have the same problem. I'm pretty meticulous and I've tried many things and it always comes back. I never use a glass rag on anything else. I even store it separately. No dice, I don't know what it is.

The outgassing of the interior in the X1 does seem to be pretty high. I always use Stoner's Invisible Glass with plenty of paper towels, but it does come back fairly quick, especially in the heat of the summer.

I thought I was just crazy.

There's always like a film of stuff on the inside of the windshield and no matter how much I clean it, it comes back.

not surprising given all the chemicals and dyes in the materials inside our vehicles.

Hehe, I have the same issue. I just go at it with Windex and low lint paper towels.

I also keep a microfiber rag in the glove box just so I can smear it in a different direction.

The glass fogs up pretty quick, but just the windshield. I don't seem to have any issues with the rest of the glass so I think it must be coming from inside the dash.

It's a bit weird cuz I've owned many a vehicle over the years and none has had this smudging like the X1. I thought I had it beat by turning the defrost on while cleaning...it was better but by no means "normal".

Film too.

Same problem on our 4 year old X1. Have booked it in for a look next week. Fogging up every month after a cleaning is not normal and there shouldn't be too much outgassing after 4 years.

You're bringing your car in for service because the windshield fogs up a month after you clean it?

My girlfriend used to own a beach house and rent it out on a weekly basis over the summer. A tenant once called to complain that there was some beach sand on the floor.

Was that you?

Yeah that was me and the six other people on this thread with the same problem. Yeah, we all rented your ex's beach house.

One thing to remember is, all the "treatments" you put on your dash and upholstery will end up on the inside of your windscreen.

To DuhCar's defense there can be other reasons for windshields getting fogged up that are actual defects, such as leaking AC or heating components.

....but the sand in the beach house thing was pretty funny!!!!!

However, haven't done those things. But I did vacuum out the beach sand.

Turns out it is the evaporator coil and they want +$3000 to fix it. Anybody else finding this problem?

First I've heard of one this early, but it can happen in any car. Had it happen in Mazdas, Hondas and VWs in the past.

$3000+ is highway robbery. According to realoem, for my x35i I either have a Valeo or Denso evaporator, which ECS quotes either $144 or $166. The same could with the BMW stamp is around $400. So, they are quoting you $2600 for labor and AC evac services. True, R&R and evaporator coils requires some work and is not trivial.....but $3000+????? Time for an indy shop.....

I use Invisible Glass and works fine for me. Did not work and was ready to throw this one too, until a detailing guy told me that most of the solutions work fine. It is the cloth that you are using that matters. He gave me 10 cloths like that and since them I am a happy guy.
Still need to clean it on a weekly - 2 weeks basis.
If you are a smoker, use the AC and so on, things get foggy pretty soon so you might need to do it more often.

BMW Canada covered it under goodwill so I don't know what the total would have been. It was out of warranty by a bit but the problem occurred inside the warranty period.

BMW Canada has made me a happy customer. 😀

I really don't know what brand the cloth is. It is white, looks like a microfiber but feels different. I remember the guy saying that he orders them somewhere in US.

UPDATE
I was finally able to talk to him and initially didn't want to tell me.
Anyway, this is the one he is using (I am using the same), he buys them in big numbers.
