I prefered the normal leather seats with lumber support; they feel less restrictive - but then, I have the 20i and I don't try to drive it like a sports car. Also, the bolsters of the sport seats are likely to show wear quicker.

Has anyone, by chance, experienced the sport seats with AND without lumbar? Do they have a similar contour? The reason I ask is because I found the seats fit me best when lumbar was fully retracted, and I'd rather avoid the Prem Pkg price hit if lumbar is not needed.

I have sports seats without lumbar, I feel pretty good in it. But sometimes, during a long journey (>2 hours), I wish I had lumbar so I can change the contour of the back to reduce fatigue.

In Europe, lumbar is a separate item. In US, if you do a custom build, you might be able to specify just the lumbar without the full premium pkg.

I just took delivery of a new X1 xdrive 28i and the power SensaTec seats cause extreme discomfort and actively cause spinal injury and pain, after about 10-20 mins. Which was longer than my test drive.
My dealer has graciously offered to help me out by getting me into another car with the Premium Package and lumbar but it's about 6k on top to get into that car due to paying DMV reg fees again etc.
Has anyone found out what other BMW series' seats are compatible with this interior for a complete swap?
That would be great because I could just swap back in the original seat at the end of my lease.

I don't have the sport seats, but I have a fully loaded vehicle including lumbar support and I found the seats to be nice. it is important to adjust the seat in a proper way so the legs rest, if a portion is still "in the air" pain will show up.
In some cases, due to the anatomy, some cars just won't work for some people; if the torso is longer you need to drop the seat but that will affect the legs, the up in the front function will help but it has some limitations...
I find many times that people don't know to really adjust the seat.

I have sport seats without lumbar, but knew from the start that I'd be changing that - the simplest way is to take the back cover of the seat off (easy) and slip blue-foam (camping pad material) under the spring wires, contouring layers until the lumbar support is to your liking. Some trial and error, but once done, it fits exactly the way you want it. I did this on the passenger side to my wife's liking, but what I actually did on the driver's side was install the OEM lumbar inflation pad. While you can buy the electric pumps and switches and retrofit the whole thing (there are posts on this) my solution (don't laugh) was to just inflate each of the two bladders in the pad with a rubber bulb from a blood pressure cuff (you can buy the bulbs only) connected to the pad by small plastic tubing. Totally adjustable and costs less than an oil change.

As as aside, if you (like me) find the sport seat bottom bolsters to be a bit too pressing, a solution is to add two layers of blue foam on the very underside of the seat, slipping them under the spring wires there. It raises the seat bottom enough that the bolsters do not feel so high or pressing.

I bought mine with the sensatec seat and it turned out very uncomfortable without the lumbar support. Went to the dealer to get the parts to add lumbar but they were no help. So bought a used leather seat with lumbar (had less than 3k in the car) for $500. Swapped the seats. It seems that the leather seat is harder than the non-leather. The lumbar makes it better but its still just OK. I tried the sports seats before buying this car and those seem a bit longer and I didn't like that.

I did, the normal seats are shit. Not supportive at all, and uncomfortable. It's literally a pain in my ass when I'm driving 30 min+. The seat base cannot be adjuster which is really usefull and it lacks the tilting function which also is a must to get comfortable.
Unless you're 80 kg+, then get the normal seats, fat people and sportseats doesn't work

If you don't mind me asking, what car did you pull the seats from?

It's coming from a 2013 X1. I found it at car-part.com. There were a few more seats available but this was the cheapest. Just wanted to take the lumbar out and retrofit but being lazy, ended up swapping it. Will do that project an other day.
